I bought this after being asked to sing the Bass solos in the Messiah, and figured I really should buy my own copy, rather than relying on someone elses. I bought this, as I knew that it was the same edition the Organist was playing from, and also many of the singers. It's so popular, it makes life a lot easier when finding a place "Page 153, Letter C" (or whatever), rather than having to ask the person next to you what the words are. The book is good quality, with lots of references throughout it as to how Handel originally wrote passages, though some of them are weird and I think the alterations are good. It gives lots of different arrangements too, same piece for Soprano, Alto and Bass, so very useful for different parts. My only criticism of this book is it can be a bit confusing with the different arrangements. Sometimes the Soprano version is followed directly by the Alto, so you have to skip a few pages for the next piece. However, you can write in the page numbers during your rehearsal, or put a little tab in or something if it bothers you that much. I think alternative arrangements should have been left to the Appendix, but each to their own. TL:DR? Great book, good quality, know exactly where you are; rather than having to ask, go through it before the performance so you know when to skip something.

It’s a little strange to write a review about a vocal score. Especially one so old. However. After loosing my old Watkins shaw edition i had to purchase another one. It’s larger than the original. It has been re typeset making it very clear. But most of all. It has been bound so it stays open. This made a messiah rehearsal much less stressful

In my lifetime, I have had three or four copies of the choral music of the Messiah. Some of them were on loan from church or school and I even bought a copy at a used bookstore once (and lost it). I love this as a choral piece of music. But this copy is the best I've owned for one simple reason - the book and the type are larger than I have ever seen. Anyone who has performed Messiah and is not required to memorize it will appreciate how much larger this version is. All lines are easier to read. None of the measures get lost into the fold of the book. All parts are easy to follow, so no matter if you're a spoiled soprano like me, or a bass enjoying those low notes, you'd actually be able to read this while performing. Yes, it is a sort of scholarly version of the work, but Messiah is not a casual piece of music. It was written to be performed in front of royalty, and while I doubt King George I (the first) would have had Handel killed if he didn't like it, he certainly could have ruined his career. It was written in a time that is very different from ours (she typed into a strange machine to post her words and express her opinion for all to see), and therefore, to include the full variations in the work is to incorporate everything that Handel wanted with it. It is his best known work and really, his masterpiece. The editors treat it as such. Thoroughly enjoyable for a casual musician and huge fan of the work and composer.
