THE 1967 digitally restored DVD DOES have English SUBTITLES.
Great Digitally Restored [DVD] (1967) in all respects. Still a lasting masterpiece. One of my favoritse of all time. And Very Very Important: please note HOH people (like me: There ARE actually also English subtitles. I was very reluctant to purchase this as the details provided make no mention at all about this. So I was very relieved when it arrived. Had I known it however, I could have saved myself the worry by inspecting the cover itself and seen that such subtitles were indeed provided. Lesson learned. At the same time I can recall how the details provided for The Third Man dvd had also claimed subtitles....and when It arrived it turned out that this was NOT so, a very disappointing experience also noted by many other reviewers.

DVD…..Film……
…..one of my own favourite film classics. The Actors, casting, the depiction and authenticity of the original writings in place and time. The acting of all the cast support very much in keeping and of highest quality. The ‘place’ of women in society, the naive flattery, the poverty, the military. The land and agriculture, the extremes of weather with the vulnerability of farmers producing crops and livestock in the elements. The contrast with manual labour, mechanization, the “running off to join the circus”, faking death.Romantic love and heartbreak, the death of children, parties and funerals, imprisonment. The film score and traditional folk songs,Evocative of time and place.

Devizes
I can see why the BFI decided to preserve this motion picture and restore it. I'm not sure what the original film stock would of been but the restoration has captured a delightful reproduction, I doubt 4k would of enhanced it any further with a master of this sort of age in color. It does run for a long time, and it's a bit of a lazy afternoon with a glass of wine film to be honest. The story moves slowly but factual which in a lot of Hardy writings keeps a faithful feeling to it. Devizes scenes are lovely, and would be impossible to commission in this day and age but little has changed so do visit this delightful Wiltshire town. The additional extra on Devizes is interesting and I learned a few nice facts and is presented by a local historian who also has several books published. It seems odd for this release that the extra was produced on a tight budget, shot on a HD camcorder or similar with no production costs incurred. I would suggest not watching the whole movie in one go, split it in two. The merit for me comes in the composition of the scenes, the editing and the choice of film stock at the time, the tones and colors even now are lovely.

I already owned a DVD version which was acceptable but not great, this restored Blu ray is a big step ...
Im reviewing the Blu Ray disc as released by BFI. firstly quality, I already owned a DVD version which was acceptable but not great, this restored Blu ray is a big step up in quality from that so definitely worth having if you are a fan of the movie, and who wouldn't be, its a classic film from the golden age of British film making, tremendous performances from all cast and ravishing cinematography from Nic Roeg, they just don't make movies like this anymore which is a great shame but thankfully this movie has been preserved and restored and looks like it was shot yesterday, the Blu ray quality extracts the best possible visual quality in terms of sharpness and colour saturation, it really is a beautiful film to watch. On the blu ray there are some interesting extras, an up to date interview with Terence Stamp shot especially for this release, in the interview we see mr Stamp looking very dapper in dark overcoat and trilby hat strolling through what looks like Soho's Golden Square in London, he sits on a bench and talks very eloquently and candidly about his experience making the movie back in the 1960s, he reveals that director John Schleisenger disliked him for no particular reason other than the producers insistence that Stamp be cast in the role, Stamp reveals that he took it as a learning process and challenge to turn in a good performance despite the director not even wanting him in the film!! I think he succeeds in that in a spectacular way. Highly recommended and if you are wondering how this compares with the more recent remake, well there is no comparison really, this original version wins hands down in every department.

VERY ENJOYABLE PERIOD DRAMA
Bathsheba Everdene a young woman, played by Julie Christie, inherits a farm after her uncle dies. Before long, she is pursued by three very different men in life, each wanting to marry her. Peter Finch plays William Boldwood, a wealthy bachelor, Terence Stamp plays Sergeant Troy, a solider, and Alan Bates, plays a shepherd, who she employs on her farm. This is a period drama set in Victorian times (around 1866) there is no action, just a well told story, directed by John Schlesinger. For anybody who likes period dramas, you should enjoy this. The film was shot in 2.35:1 and the photography uses this format to its full extent. The sets are very good, as are the costumes. This film has been fully restored, so there are no scratches or blemishes on the print used, and it is a nice clean transfer. There is a fine layer of grain noticeable in some scenes, but this is how it would have been seen in cinemas in 1967, so no problem, and it is not obtrusive, and will not spoil your enjoyment of a very good film.Picture Quality is very good with a sharp image. As I said above the transfer is in the original aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Colours are natural, and the sound is in the original mono.Final word. According to some reviews, this version has a slight tendency towards blue, in comparison to the American version. I didn't find any problem with the colour, and unless you can watch the two versions side by side, I don't think you will notice anything, if at all, different between the two. This review is for Studio Canal's Blu Ray release.

The movie would not run for me
The movie was no good because it said I did not have the correct code on my DVD what ever that means. I am not sure if this movie was for UK usage ?

Great Experience to Watch
This movie has incomparable photography. I had a nice copy I recorded from TCM, but I wanted a Blu Ray that might be even better. Well, it is MUCH better. I could leave it on all day so that “whenever I look up, there it will be.” Of course, the soundtrack is one of the bests of all time. This Blu Ray is REGION 2. Don’t think it might play on your high dollar Blu Ray player. IT WILL NOT, unless it specifies Region 2.

Latest version of Hardy's Novel is far superior.
The movie is good but has been surpassed by the new version featuring Matthias Schoenaerts and Carey Mulligan. The cinematography is fabulous in the later version. It introduced me to Matthias Schoenaerts who is a wonderful actor. One of the best movies I have seen since The English Patient and Out of Africa. Matthias is the perfect leading man.
