Meticulous and obsessional, DI Chandler and his unit are based in Whitechapel – an area drenched in dark history and sinister goings-on. It is where Jack the Ripper carried out his horrific crimes. It is where The Krays constructed their Empire of Crime based on sadomasochistic punishments. This series unearths a Whitechapel full of Gothic shadows, cobblestones and ancient hostelries. There’s fear in the Huguenot weaving houses of Wilkes Street, and terrifying discoveries in the dark corners and rooftops around Brick Lane. Ed Buchan joins DI Chandler and hard-bitten DS Miles as their historical advisor – operating out of the bowels of the police station among musty tomes of the crime archive. Chandler is convinced crimes of the past hold the key to solving crimes of the present. The team is tested by bloody and vicious murders on their own doorstep. Do crimes such as the Thames Torso murders, HH Holmes, The Zodiac Killer and The Ratcliffe Highway murders unlock the truth? In Whitechapel, history isn’t dead - it’s deadly. Review: Very good thrid instalment! - This third instalment differs from the previous ones since this time, we have three stories divided in two parts instead of one story in three episodes. DI Chandler has to deal with a killer hiding inside walls, a poisoner/dismemberer and a vengeance-seeker while coping with problems of his own: keeping his OCD under control and getting a date! Fortunately, DS Miles is here to keep the team on line - and play occasional matchmaker for his shy superior officer. The murders are horrific, mixed with fearful situations (a fox running through London to scavenge human remains, a house haunted by the spirit of a murdered little girl, a killer wearing an ugly mask) and disappointing dead ends, but there are also light-hearted scenes like the friendly banter between Chandler and Miles, the antics of overly-enthusiastic historian Buchan and the general interaction through the teammates, with a special mention to hero-worshipping Kent, who gets jealous each time a woman expresses interest towards the DI: he looks like a little brother who resents the presence of a girlfriend near his older sibling! All in one, a very good new season with its usual mix of past and present crimes. Waiting for season 4! Review: Gripper of a Ripper - Whitechapel series 1 - I remember watching this on tv some time ago, and thought it good then. However having received the dvd I sat down to watch just one episode, and ended up watching the whole dvd. The acting is superb, and Rupert Penry Jones is excellent as a newly promoted DI not really knowing his way around a case like this, and coming up against a case hardend D S Miles who thinks he knows it all. You can really feel for Ruperts D I Chandler as he battles against the top brass as well, in order to try and solve the copycat ripper murders. He gets the help of "ripperologist" Edward Buchan, and at one stage even suspects him of the murders. How D I Chandler eventually gets his team working together and earns their respect is well put over. A gripping dvd, well worth buying. I am now about to get Whitechapel series 2 & 3.

Nice addition to the series
I have to say I liked the format of Series 3 with the multiple stories instead of the single plot line. That said Series 1 is still the benchmark against which to rate anything that followed and Series 2 in my opinion was unfortunately wide of the mark. Here however the shorter stories work well rattling along at a fair pace yet still allowing character development and also keeping us the viewer entertained. The only minus point for me was that Ed is still there and if they decide on a 4th series they may find more freedom in the interplay between DI Chandler and DS Miles if he isn't and this would also help widen the breadth of storylines still further i.e. not having continually having to find some link to a previous crime from another century.

Good story but a bit creepy
I already own Whitechapel series 1 & 2. I loved series 1 following a modern Jack the Ripper, thought series 2 was pretty decent with the Krays and think series 3 is good but creepy with this (unnamed) serial killer. In my opinion series 3 better than 2 but not as good as 1. The story follows a murderer that seems unconnected with his victims. They are very gruesome crimes which the the team headed by DCI Chandler tris to solve with the guidance of historical crimes. There is a new character in the form of an over efficient female DCI from a neighboring borough who consults on the case. One of the weirdest things about this series is the little odd flashbacks throughout the episodes. Right until the end you cannot work out what they actually are. I found them seriously annoying and distracting to the story line. I hope there will be a series 4 which I will buy straight away!

The best yet.
Very keen on Series 1 and 2 of Whitechapel, so was looking forward to viewing Series 3, and not disappointed at all. In fact, blown away. This one is the best yet. The plots were constructed beautifully, excellent pace and a variety of approach to shock/horror which always gripped convincingly. The play on relationships between the DI, the DS and the team gets stronger with each episode. The graphics between sections of the stories are brilliant. The style of production reminded me of some of the ways "Sherlock" was put together, in a good way.Highly recommended.

I'm actually moving to whitechapel
Somewhat embarrassingly I only bought this because I have a serious crush on Rupert Penry-Jones having missed it on tv. It is an awesome programme. The imagery maybe cliched; the family member keeping the dead loved one, the missing head on a corpse etc. but it is still brilliant. Generally it's well acted and well directed and perfect if you want a night in watching the hottest guy on earth chase around London after a fox with a human hand in its mouth.

Love it
I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to my favorite tv-shows, as long as they are British and crime (or science fiction) I'm half way to liking it already. Whitechapel is a show I've spent the night watching (I got no excuse beyond the fact that I wanted to see it), and I've started series 3 already loving it. I have seen the end of episode two before, but I loved getting the whole story. Rupert Penry-Jones is magnificent in his role as DI Joseph Chandler, they couldn't have found a better actor in my opinon. Steve Pemberton is brilliant as Edward Buchan in my opinion, he is someone fits the role of the slightly obsessive and crime-fond Edward Buchan. Phil Davis is an actor I'm absolutely in love with; from his characters in Miss Marple, Doctor Who and Whitechapel. I love his attitude in this series as DS Ray Miles. He's the wise one, that knows the on goings of the street and he helps keep DI Chandler grounded and he helps with his OCD. I do recommend this show to people, and season three differs from the two others in the fact that it doesn't revolve around just one element (like Jack the Ripper or the Kray-Brothers).

This has the all hallmarks of an excellent British series: Well written, well acted, first class production values. I have really enjoyed all the episodes so far in this series. The characters are interesting and very likeable. I found myself really caring for them all. The actors have certainly made the most of their roles, creating memorable characters. The stories are intricately plotted, with plenty of twists and turns. Am looking forward to more from this series..

Don't care that it's somewhat formulaic, I'm entertained. Bought Series 1 and 3 (don't ask) and will now buy the other two.

One of the best dark dramas out right now. The show has built beautifully on itself. The main actors have great chemistry together. DI Chandler played by Rupert Penry-Jones is coming into romance in this season and we cheer him on. He juggles his OCD with work and personal life with a humble touch and we sympathize with his loneliness and desire to find a soul mate he can live with. Maybe this time it is the right one!
