Q: Can valves work without installing the thermostat? Just controlling via the app?

Yes... These are thermostatic valves so have the thermostat built in. Can also use external thermostats if desired. Other replies to your question clearly answering for the sake of it.

The main hub will control the heating based on the desired temperature of the room and any thermostats present in the room including the valves.

Q: I have 'normal' radiators which are turned on/off by twisting a knob. Does this somehow automate the physical twist of the knob?

Standard valves open and close manually by twisting a knob. To use Honeywell thermostats you need compatibile thermostatic valves on the radiators. Standard thermostatic valves are manually operated but maintain a temperature which can be monitored by a non connected thermostat in the room. This allows you to adjust the valve manually by trial and error to obtain the desired temperature. The Honeywell HR924UK allows you to set the desired temperature on the valve and the valve opens and closes automatically to maintain the desired temperature. These thermostats can be controlled with the addition of the Honeywell controller via WiFi and also from a mobile phone from anywhere in the world. (Manual thermostatic valves have numbers on the knob).

Q: does it work with alexa?

Yes these are compatible with both Alexa and Google Home. It's IFTTT compatible so will work with most smart home devices as well as Samsung Smart Things. There are also native apps for mobile devices. *PLEASE NOTE* This specific kit will need the Honeywell Smart Wireless Zoning Thermostat to work and connect to your smart home devices and will not just work on their own.
