My StoryMy Smart ForFour that I inherited from a friend has had a rough life lugging a heavy family of five (I mean four) around the United Kingdom. The little 1.5L engine is still frugal and willing to work hard but after years of neglect, it needed a little extra care.When I first got the car, it got a thorough service and I use a really high-quality oil made by a company that uses the same name as this symbol ",". I used their MB 229.1 rated 5W40 engine oil, as specified in the owners manual. The engine started consuming oil after months of use and topping up with frequent Italian tune-ups in British B-roads.To attempt to remedy the oil consumption issue I decided to switch to 10W40 as this is a thicker oil in the cold. I didn't want to go up to 10W50 just yet, due to reasons of cost.Oil ReviewThe Shell Helix HX7 was the cheapest oil I could find that supports MB 229.1. The oil I got did not have 'Diesel' written on it and quite frankly it doesn't matter as it meets Mercedes oil spec. The oil is a light colour and easily identifiable on the dipstick. I have driven the car for three weeks in British winter. The oil has made much improvement; the engine sounds quieter, it is smoother to drive, smoother to rev up, and more importantly; no oil consumption issues, perfect on the dipstick level.The real test will be to check the oil again in a few months time. I thought the price was a misprint - I mean Shell synthetic or even semi synthetic oil from one of the biggest, oldest, long established oil companies for this price ? You can't buy Asda oil for this price !I've used it a lot over the years and not a single problem - the engine is spotless inside and it's not used all day at 70 mph, it's used in a mixed role or urban, dual carriageway and a bit of motorway driving - it's really good stuff.BTW - ALWAYS use an OEM oil filter !

This is an excellent oil for slightly older diesel engines such as the 1.9TD engine used in my 1998 Peugeot 806, as an oil having good anti sludge properties is essential for a clean engine, Shell Helix HX7 being perfect to the extent that I intend to purchase more should it become available again.

Good quality oil, good price. One issue is that the oil that arrived did not state that it was for a Diesel engine as it shows on the picture in the add. On checking the oil that arrived was of the same spec as the oil shown in the add and that as my vehicle is Diesel I was worried about any changes in oil spec.
