Heidi (World Classics, Unabridged) Paperback – January 2, 2017

Beware, the beauty of literature is not in this edition! THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE PUFFIN IN BLOOM EDITION ONLY. Heidi is such an awesome story, the translation by Helen Dole reads so beautifully and engages the reader to follow closely along, to interact and enter into the adventure. This book has short sentences, as if to hand feed the reader so that they don't need to pay attention or engage. In other words- it's a dumbed-down translation!! Please don't deprive young readers of good literature! There is a place for simplified versions of books BUT that should be clear when purchasing that it isn't the original version and writing has been altered. This book changes the names of characters too. It is a travesty!! So, if all you want is a "pretty" cover - fine, but even the inside illustrations aren't good - it saddened me and I sent it back. Thank you, Amazon for ease of returns. Please be aware that Amazon sells different editions translated differently. Perhaps you'll find a new edition that is better than this one. I'm very happy with the used copy I found on Amazon with a copy write date of 1945. The illustrations are wonderful and the language is beautiful, and the names are not Americanized. The Puffin in Bloom edition has a character named Barbie.

I got as far as the title page in this book where it listed the author (Johanna Spyri) and the translator, Elisabeth P. Stork. Heidi was originally translated into English by Charles Tritten (who later wrote 2 sequels - "Heidi Grows Up" and "Heidi's Children"). This is NOT the version of Heidi that I grew up with and NOT what I wanted. It is going back immediately and I've already ordered another copy, this time with the translation done by Tritten. A search on Amazon for "Heidi translated by Charles Tritten" turns up a listing for the book with the original translation.

This book is illegible. Punctuation in the wrong places, headings mid-paragraph, letters replaced with punctuation... It's awful. Don't buy this version. We were excited about this book but we will be sending this copy back for one we can actually read. 0 stars.

Review of "Heidi"Hot Toasty Rag, October 5, 2018I grew up, along with every other little girl in America, watching the Shirley Temple version of Heidi. In my twenties, I rented the 1968 tv-movie version, and I was appalled by the changes in the story. How dare they! I thought. Well, I recently read the original novel, and I must apologize. The Shirley Temple version doesn’t follow the book very well. All the “changes” were taken straight from the book.A little orphan girl is taken to live with her scary grandfather in the Swiss Alps. He’s a social outcast, but she wins him over because she’s so delightful. Her adventures continue as she meets new friends, including a blind village woman, a local goatherd, and an invalid wealthy child.Even though this is an incredibly popular children’s book, I couldn’t imagine reading it as a child. It’s very dry, and much of Heidi’s activities seem repetitive without leading to a greater goal. I didn’t like the original novel, and the next time I crave a little Heidi, I’ll stick to Shirley.

My heart just melted. When I was around 12 I think I had 2 Children classic books. This one Robbin Hood and this one that I ordered Heidi. The Heidi book was lost and it’s just bothered me for year that I didn’t have it. Ppl would talk to me about my cool Robbin Hood book and I would say it use to be Robbin and Heidi. I would tell them about the Heidi book. I looked on Amazon and sure enough they had the exact book. It looks just like my Robbin Hood book. I opened it to look at all the familiar pictures and my heart just melted. You know how kids have a favorite stuffed animal. Well for years I traveled around with a backpack with these two books and Tigger and Pooh. I didn’t want to be with out them. I really love having them both together again. Thank you.

My father bought me a copy of Heidi when I was five. I still have this book. He read it to me again and again until he decided I could read well enough to do it on my own. I have read Heidi periodically all my life, 70 years later. Whenever I read Heidi, I want to drink milk out of a wooden bowl and joyfully shout Grandfather! grandfather! I am very fond of goats!Read this book about an orphan girl and her love for her life in the Swiss Alps with her grandfather, Peter, the grandmother, and the goats. It will brighten your day, your week, your year, your life! Buy it for a child you love and read it with them!

This review pertains to the Puffin in Bloom edition of Heidi, rather than to the literary merit of the book or translation (by Eileen Hall).The cover illustration is done by Anna Bond who may be better known for her lovely stationery collection, Rifle Paper Co. The cover is a vibrant yellow-green with the title in gold embossing over a floral-framed mountain scene. The back cover features a pull-out quote – "Heidi looked around with growing delight at the mountain peaks she knew so well and which seemed to greet her like old friends."The interior illustrations, taken from the 1956 edition of Heidi also published by Puffin, are charmingly vintage. There appears to be one illustration per chapter. The book is typeset in Minion and just the right size to be accessible to both children and adults.This edition also includes end notes with a profile of Johanna Spyri, information about Switzerland, and brief character and reading guides.This would make a special addition to any growing library.

I have read 50 pages so far, and things are goin' good. The one thing I'd say about this book, is that it's a teeny-weeny bit small. It coulda done with bein' about twice as big.Deta is a hard-.ss and Heidi is joyful and contemporary, meanin' by that that she isn't unreal- she can stare like daggers, with a flinty look; well, by that I mean she can look Deta or Grandpa straight in the eye: Deta anyway.She likes goats, and there was unpasteurised milk them days, an' people was as tough as Jigger Johnson or Tom Fink; Heidi included.So there was goats milk, or goats' milk, straight from the tap. Heidi mighta' been an eyes (and ears, so as not to upset the meter of the sentence) of Johanna Spryi, and 'er (readin "William Tell Retold, by P.G. Wodehouse) wish to show a pictorial evocative diorama 'n' panorama; a panorama anyway of the Alpine wilderness; with fir trees howling from the wind- or t'other way 'round.So the sights and sounds are there. A prop pos the size though, the book could've been' a bit bigger, as it is only the size of a kitchen-box o' matches (in height) an' one-an'-a-half the time wide; as an aforesaid Swan kitchen match box. But Marion Edwardes seems to have been a great translator. In 1910.

Heidi is one of the earliest books I remember reading as a child & I was excited to share it with my son.The story hasn’t aged, and is as enjoyable as I remember. The fact that it’s now downloadable on kindle for free is a definite bonus.

Another great classic to add to my list of books read this year.For those of you who have not read Heidi it is the story of a young girl who is sent to live with her grandfather who lives on a mountain. She and the old man form an unlikely but heart-warming connection before her auntie cruelly takes her away and sends her to live with another family to be a companion for a sickly young girl. Heidi’s desire to go home makes her ill and eventually she is reunited with her grandfather.Heidi is a gorgeous story and my lovely Puffin in Bloom edition is a beautiful edition to my library. If you love classics then you must read Heidi.Heidi by Johanna Spyri is available now.

I never realized, at the time, as a child, that so many editions of Heidi existed ! However, when I wanted to have a copy of my own, again (the original copy had been given away), no-other Heidi, but the one I remembered, would do ! Thank goodness many Amazon sellers show pictures, give dates : thanks to this, after scrolling down many a Heidi page on Amazon, I eventually found one that had been published at the same time as my original copy, and another, that had been printed later, but still had the same dust-cover .. so I bought both !Happiness is a trip to the past, and what better past than a reminder of the dreams you had, as a child ?Today it's all on a screen, but, 'at my time', imagination was nourished by lingering on a page, on an illustration, time and time again, before putting the book away, for good : now, I remember a world that was, with warmth, even if it no longer is, thanks to a beautifully written book ... and a well supplied, and organised site !Thank you, Amazon.

I just love this book. It was one of the first books I had as a child and loved the story. I have visited snow covered mountains and whilst there Heidi was always in my thoughts. That is why I purchased the book to read again. I would definitely recommend this book and the seller, as I received it very promptly.
