2008 re-issue of the British guitar legend's 1987 & 1988 albums on the one disc.

Instrumental Virtuosity
These two studio albums (from 1987 & 1988) were entirely instrumental recordings, something Lee had never done before. Albert Lee earned his rep as an ace guitar player, but I've also enjoyed it when he sings on his albums. I think he has a very expressive, distinctive voice. But the disappointment of having no vocals on these songs is tempered by the virtuoso playing on both albums. These guys cook! And I say "guys", as in plural. It's not just Albert Lee showing off his guitar chops on these compositions, although that's most impressive in itself. But his band members also dazzle, particularly keyboard player Jim Cox. Albert Lee also adds some piano on two tracks off the "Speechless" album (which is my favorite of the two), but it's mostly Cox that plays keyboards, piano, and harpsichord, and something called a "coronaphone", on both albums. This 2-for-1 collection was put together by the people at Australia's Raven Records and like the other reissues that I've bought from that label the sound quality is excellent and the CD comes with a booklet that has information about the recordings and some comments from Albert Lee.A very worthwhile purchase for guitar players or just anyone who appreciates excellent musicanship.

Spectacular guitar/Piano?
It's no secret that Albert Lee is a fantastic player and the guitar work on this re-issue package is spectacular. Piano playing and some of the material, not so interesting. But the highs on this record can't get much higher, and they are more than worth the price.

Five Stars
"Tiger Rag" and "Country Gentleman" are worth the price of this album, no matter how much it costs!
