The heads have a texture printed on them; they are in fact very slick cheap plastic. The small and large drums sound okay; they're just at a low tuning. The middle drum has a slight wrinkle and very little tone. I don't imagine this will be the same throughout every set, as I don't get the impression there's a huge amount of quality control for something like this. The mallets are a bit rough and unfinished, one of them having an actual splinter-waiting-to-happen sticking out in the middle. For a basic learning tool, sure, these will be okay--you just might want to take some sandpaper to the mallets and maybe the thumb holes in the drum rims. As a kind of fun auxiliary percussion, I think these might work okay close mic'd, but there's nothing fantastic about them.

Honestly, these drums felt kind of “cheap” out of the box. However, once I played them my opinion of them completely changed. These drums sound surprisingly good. They are easy to hold, and the set includes a nice variety of sizes that can nest inside each other for storage. It includes one mallet for each drum (all 3 mallets are the same size).Overall, we are very happy with this set of hand drums.
