![The Day After Tomorrow - Single Disc Edition [2004] [DVD]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71+M7D5tEAL.jpg)

Product Description Mega-budget, special-effects packed action adventure sci-fi epic directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, Stargate), in which global warming and the greenhouse effect have given rise to abrupt climate change - with cataclysmic consequences for the entire planet. Dennis Quaid stars as Professor Adrian Hall, a paleoclimatologist who is fighting to save the world from a second ice age and all the natural disasters that herald it: floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes to name but a few. But first, Hall must complete a more personal mission: his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is stranded in New York City where he was taking part in a school competition when the catastrophe began. As well as facing a perpetual onslaught of natural catastrophes, Hall must fight his way through the mass of humanity fleeing south into warmer climes... but can he reach his son in time to save him? .co.uk Review Supreme silliness doesn't stop The Day After Tomorrow from being lots of fun for connoisseurs of epic-scale disaster flicks. After the blockbuster profits of Independence Day and Godzilla, you can't blame director Roland Emmerich for using global warming as a politically correct excuse for destroying most of the northern hemisphere. Like most of Emmerich's films, this one emphasises special effects over such lesser priorities as well-drawn characters and plausible plotting, and his dialogue (cowritten by Jeffrey Nachmanoff) is so laughably trite that it could be entirely eliminated without harming the movie. It's the spectacle that's important here, not the lame, recycled plot about father and son (Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal) who endure an end-of-the-world scenario caused by the effects of global warming. So sit back, relax and enjoy the awesome visions of tornado-ravaged Los Angeles, blizzards in New Delhi, Japan pummelled by grapefruit-sized hailstones, and Manhattan flooded by swelling oceans and then frozen by the onset of a modern ice age. It's all wildly impressive, and Emmerich obviously doesn't care if the science is flimsy, so why should you? --Jeff Shannon

5 STAR 'SPECIAL FEATURES' 2 DISC DVD A 'MUST HAVE'!
Even if you own THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW original dvd with its limited Special Feartures, this revised 2 disc edition is worth having if you are interested in how a film like this is put together. The second disc is the most comprehensive & informative look behind the making of any film that I've seen. Roland Emmerich has gathered thousands of specialist professionals who create all the elements of this 'disaster movie' to make it the success it was & is. There are many catergories with sub-divisions, a mini documentary on Global Warming, and many other interesting articles. Dennis Quaid & Jake Gyllenhaal & other actors give personal insights along with writers, the cinematographer, C.G.I. & Digital experts & the Special Effects Supervisor. Over all these, Director Roland Emmerich presides & informs on the trials & tribulations that occurred pre, during & post-production, the last has a section devoted to the score & shows the huge symphony orchestra in the studio playing various cues with an inset of the scenes they accompany. THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW is a warning to us all, that global-warming is a threat & the earth's environment is fragile. The film is a work of fiction but the 'message' is clear. This film & it's features disc is an absolute bargain at under £4.00.!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Could do better...
I already owned the 2-disc Special Edition but other reviews have suggested the BR conversion was a worthy upgrade. So I took my chances and purchased, but now I disagree.Firstly, for context, I have a good quality 4K TV/4K Blu ray player/sound system, so my existing DVD's are 'upscaled'.However, I failed to see any significant enhancement of the pictures - there is a little, but not much. The sound is slightly better, but still not really a worthwhile upgrade. My 4-stars are for the film - just. (I'll come back to that). If I was just rating the BR enhancement, I'd give it 2 stars at best.As for the film, I like it as entertainment, but even allowing for the fact that it is a fantasy of sorts, some of the much vaunted special effects are almost a joke, to my eyes.As the giant tidal wave approaches the (fictitious) NY Library, it must have gone into seriously slow motion to enable that action scene outside the Library to be played out in full! When Frank falls through the roof of the Mall, Jason takes the strain on the rope, but not before he takes off his gloves (in massively sub-zero temperatures!!), just so the Director can show him bleeding due to the pressure on his exposed hands (so much blood, from what ought to have been deep gashes, but they then disappear!).As they continue their 70 odd mile on-foot trek from Philadelphia to NY, in atrocious conditions (in just a couple of days!), they obviously choose to take the scenic route to pass close by the statue of Liberty, because that's not on the obvious shortest path to the Library!Anyway, these bits of nonsense are easily disposed to the 'suspended disbelief locker' because the story in general is, as I say, entertaining, with some great imagery, nonsense notwithstanding! But only just 4 stars in my view.

This really makes you think!
After all the hype, I was sceptical about buying this DVD. After all, it could have been a waste of money, but to my surprise it is well worth the cost!Whilst there are some parts of the film which, oddly, seem to have been truncated. The bits I thought might have been cut weren't even in the 'deleted scenes'. So how come I think it's been worth the expense? Simply, because of the nature of the film itself.I'm not normally a movie buff, and the only actor I recognised was Ian Holme, but having said that the large grain of truth or probability this film carries, really does 'make you think'.What if the whole 'global warming' warnings are really true? Then it is possible that the weather patterns depicted in this film, could happen. Probably not within the time scale shown but yes, it is a possibility. The acting was good, the special effects amazing (although the wolves were perhaps not that brilliant). The ultimate message, that mankind would survive in the long term, encouraging. We are an adaptable species. The film also has a positive feel about it. The main characters survive, and you can sense the hope that is generated. Yes, I enjoyed it, and yes I will watch it again, and again.

You must watch this if you care about our planet
This is a stunning film and covers a multitude of countries rather than just America, which is the norm these days. But more important than that, this could actually happen; it is not science fiction, it is science fact.Of course, the worst offenders of pollution are the Americans, Chinese and probably Russia too. Until those countries' behaviour is modified, attempts by other countries are worthwhile but sadly a small drop in a very large ocean. Not even the current American president believes in global warming and with that sort of attitude, our planet that we call "Mother Earth" is doomed.
