50 Fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars
M**S
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!
These are quite simply the most beautiful paper pieced star blocks you will ever see. Although complex and time consuming, even an intermediate quilter like me could do these. The book is easy to follow too--Just copy the templates and go to town! If you've never paper pieced before, watch a few YouTube paper piecing tutorials to learn the basic skills involved. There are a few different techniques people use, so it's important to know a little before you start. Believe it not, this was my first attempt at paper piecing--Which tells you that the blocks are not difficult as the look. The only downside is that the CD included is only a tutorial and doesn't have the printable templates. However, since the patters are SO FABULOUS, I couldn't bring myself to remove a star. Don't be intimidated by these--If I can do them, so can you!

No patterns on the CD!!!
I am following several blogs on paper-piecing and some of them mentioned this book. One of the stars was a combo of 2 in this book. I gave it 4 stars because the enclosed CD is to show how Carol does her piecing. IT DOES NOT INCLUDE PATTERNS FOR THESE STARS! You must still take the book to the copy store to get your patterns printed out. I am having to get the spine of the book removed and have it bound with the plastic comb thingee so I can lay the book flat on the copier. According to the info in the book, you can order a CD with the patterns from Carol at an extra cost. I'm not a happy camper about that. Had the info on Amazon mentioned something about the CD, I would have ordered a cheaper version, used, that didn't have the CD. It's basically worthless to me. Buyer beware! If you need instruction on how to paper-piece, then the CD is what you need.

Lots of helpful pieces
Book was as expected. 50 different Paper-pieced stars all shown with direct instructions. This book has helped give me simple ideas to get my quilt started. Have been using this book for a lot of ideas and simple projects for some time now. Some patterns aren't my style but the majority of them are very interesting and I would not have been able to create such patterns with out the book. It has also helped me create my own ideas after I picked up on the measurements used on certain pieces. Also included is the CD which is a great bonus. All directions are simple to follow.

Nice patterns and instruction.
I love the patterns in this book. They are so versatile. I needed this as a refresher for paper piecing because I had not done it is awhile and this had a good amount of instructions and I was able to use this easily.

CD Not necessary
I love the blocks in this book, and I am looking forward to diving in. I bought the version with the CD, assuming that it would contain digital files so the templates could be printed out. Not so. It contains a tutorial for paper piecing. Not bad, but had I known that I wouldn't have spent the extra on the CD. As it was, I still had to purchase the digital block files separately.

Content is good, but the lay-out of the book is not ...
Overpriced. Content is good, but the lay-out of the book is not so. It is impossible to copy the blocks required on a standard copier. Carol Doak actually suggests in the book that for a nominal fee, most copy shops will remove the binding of the book and 3 hole punch the pages or spiral bind it to facilitate using it on a copy machine. Having paid in excess of £80.00 for the book, further expense is not worth the effort. I have taken the book apart myself, making it worthless to pass on eventually. In retrospect, I regret having bought it as so much information is available on the internet.

Fabulous Paper pieced stars.
I bought this book as a tool in my small teaching group, having introduced them to the this method of patchwork using another of Carol Doak's paper piecing books. This book of star blocks looks so complicated, but the method is the same, and the way it is explained and illustrated is very good and makes it achieveable even for relative beginners to the craft. Each of the blocks has a separate page showing the actual block, an illustration depicting 4 blocks (which shows the secondary pattern achieved) and the facing page has miniature diagrams of the block (for you to colour in using colours of your choice) and then full size diagrams to trace or photocopy to make the block. The only negative on this book is that it cannot be photocopied without mutilating the book as it will not lie flat. I had to have the spine cut off and then hole punched the pages and put into a ring binder to make this a working tool. Would be SO much better if it had been ring bound.

good variety of pieced stars
My copy did not have a cd. Uncertain how easy it will be to copy the 'pieces' using my printer. Explanation for foundation piecing is relatively clear. Many of the designs appear to be quite complex.
