As good as I had hoped it would be
Finished the Last Guardian last night, so I know there are no nasty surprises which would otherwise spoil a superb experience. The story is a familiar one to fans of its predecessor, Ico, in which a small boy befriends an unusual companion and they need to work together to escape a strange maze like castle of high towers and deep dungeons. Here, the creature, Trico, is far more handy to have around than Yorda (we called her Orpa) from Ico, he will fight off the enemies and carry you to places which are impossible for a small boy to reach, similarly the unnamed boy in this tale is essential in finding ways through narrow passages and opening doors for the pair of them. The puzzles are similar to those from Ico, in that they are somewhat ambiguous until you have completed them then they suddenly make sense. I will admit I did look up a few of them as some where so obscure I just couldn't see what to do next, usually it was a case of something I'd tried but not gone about it in quite the right way.Graphically the game varies between very good and truly amazing, in the early stages I was thinking it didn't really show off the power of the PS4, but toward the end of the game where you are moving around the high towers with the sun low in the sky it suddenly looks jaw droppingly good.Gameplay is fun and what I really like about it is that just like Ico the main focus is not on blasting things to death or avoiding being shot yourself, it is simply a case of finding a route out of the massive castle like area for both characters by solving puzzles. There are occasional guards to deal with, these will throw spears at Trico or try to pick the boy up and carry him off to one of the blue doors scattered around the place, they need to be avoided when the boy is on his own but as soon as he can bring Trico into the fray the guards are wiped out in seconds. Battle seems to tire the creature so you will need to go in search of glowing barrels which serve as food. Not all fights are down to Trico though and as you will see the boy plays a key part in all of them especially in the later stages. The story is what truly makes this game amazing, seeing the relationship develop between the two characters is very moving, and you would be very hard hearted indeed not to feel something for them later in the game. Some of the cut scenes have to be seen to be believed its like watching the best parts of a Studio Ghibli film within the game.So onto the bad points - the controls are a real battle at times, you can spend a long long time trying to work out what you should be doing because Trico hasn't responded to a command, then seemingly doing the same thing again he will suddenly respond. It could be argued that this is just like trying to work with animals, which having dogs of my own I can agree with, but it is very frustrating at times. The only other truly frustrating experience I can think of from playing is the sequence where you need to collect a food barrel from beneath a broken rail line, every time I threw the barrel across to the next platform it rolled off and I had to start all the way from the bottom again. Eventually I discovered that the barrels can be lifted a short distance as well as thrown and solved the problem this way, but it was a hugely annoying waste of half an hour on something which should have taken minutes. Apart from this there are little niggles of the boy getting lost while climbing on Trico, you are trying to see where he has gone but the camera is showing the creature or worse still firmly fixed on a wall. Also he quite often sticks to Trico like he has superglue on his hands, this is a problem when you are trying to climb down or jump off onto a platform, you find ways around it but it feels like an issue from an earlier gaming era. Overall though my enjoyment of the game was never spoilt by the controls, the narrative is too powerful, the puzzle elements too strong. and quite frankly Trico is too darned cute! So in spite of any misgivings I have to give the experience overall 5 stars. I bought the PS4 because I knew this game was on the way and I have to say I would happily do so again.

The Trilogy is now complete.
I was so close to canceling my pre-order earlier this week after all the mixed early reviews but... alas, Im so glad I didnt.Yes, the control can be at times cumbersome and fiddly. Yes, the framerate suffers sometimes and the camera seems to try its best to pick the worst angle to view the action from, and Yes, the main character seems to have a slightly unfinished feel especially compared to the superslick character creation and feel were used to these days... but, this game is still fantastic. After about thirty minutes of play and once I grasped the learning curve with Trico it all started to click into place and then the immersive beauty of the gameworld started to draw me in.Who cares if the graphics arent quite up to scratch if the actual world itself is this well designed and brilliant to explore? The Team Ico games always seem to be set in the same world which is not a negative because this aging, vast crumbling landscape has some bewildering architecture and vertigo inducing vista's that just have me staring in amazement sometimes, in fact the first few times you make it outside early on after crawling through catacombs your jaw will drop, some truly amazing moments for me which gave me goosebumps and no mistake... aided no end by the fantastic sound and score in the background. The music is used to brilliant effect, incidental and always introduced at the perfect moment, and the ambient effects are absolutely spot on and exactly as you would imagine the world would sound if you were there. The star of the show is obviously Trico though, a groundbreaking marvel of design and intelligence that you start to slowly bond with as the gameplay hours pass. I wont spoil it for you but he/she whatever Trico is? really does add so much to the game.Im only four hours in as I write this so I may add more to this review at some point in the future but I will just say that of you like me, liked Ico and Shadow of the Colossus do not hesitate to get this game, its THAT world revisited, that ethereal world were all three games are set and its absolutely superb to traverse and unearth its secrets, especially with a buddy like Trico.Awe-inspiring, brilliant, breathtaking... ignore the mediocre reviews because this is going to be another classic. Buy it now.

Can’t wait for Fumito Ueda’s next game
this is my absolute favorite game fumito ueda crafts a beautiful piece of art with every game he gets his hands on. i see a lot of criticism for this game, which i think stems from unrealistic expectations from people who game often. Sure, the mechanics may be difficult in some places, but i had HARDLY any issue so i was super shocked to see criticism online. the story that is told is absolutely amazing and the scenery is gorgeous. the reality shop you form with trico is shockingly realistic and made me long to hang out with my dog. the personality of an animal was captured so beautifully in this game. we need to step back and appreciate what makes a truly good game

Amazing game!
So unique and so fun to figure out how to get Trico to do what you need him to do. A bunch of fun for me and my partner to play and watch together.
