Java Software Solutions: Foundations of Program Design

This book is fine to start with Java, and believe that there's no reason why to spend hundreds just to get the latest 8th Ed. However, this is only a start you might have to buy another book for more in depth explanations or to further continue Java because the book is sort of superficial.

I use this book in conjunction with other online sources for learning java. I think Lewis has layed this book out well for learning the java basics. I enjoy the examples, the reading and the problems. I make sure I understand the problems 100% before moving on to the next chapter.

Wanting to learn Java? Even if you have never coded this book will help you from the simplest "Hello World" to more complex object oriented programming.In the class room or out this is an excellent starting place.

Don't get me wrong. This is a very good textbook (went through all but the last couple chapters) and it is very informative and easy to understand. The reason I am giving it three stars is that even though it costs near one hundred dollars it does not even include access to "MyProgrammingLab" which it makes it appear like it does. It even has a whole page (behind your access card) dedicated to "advertising" this site. If you want this, you have to pay an extra 40 bucks!!! WHAT A RIP OFF!So the author of the book is very good, subject matter is always interesting, publishing company is greedy!Overall great book if you dont mind being taken back a Benjamin.

It is hard to understand at times but since we use it in class the book works very well with the lectures. The example problems given help a lot and there is also online materials using the code included in the book.

It came to me water damaged, but overall the material in the book is worth the read.

This book has detailed and structured information and examples. Beginners can easy get the right track of Java programming. Definitely recommended.
