Q: Is there any way to get the horrible smell out of the lunch bag when it’s new? I soaked overnight in water and Dawn.

I have never noticed strong odors. If Dawn doesn't work I would try a mild solution of white vinegar and water, let it soak overnight then use the Dawn again.

Q: Does the second layer have a function? I just received this and it's super cute! There is an outer container that lifts up. What is the purpose for it

Hi Raina, You can use only the outer container for sandwich or salad, if you need take different kind of food, better use two layer together, inner tray has more compartments.

Q: Is it microwave safe?

It says it is when you look at the chart. There is a check mark next to “microwave safe”
