This is a powerful, compact red-beam flashlight, great for preserving your night vision. The whole thing fits in the palm of my hand and the diameter is about the size of a quarter at it's widest. It only has one mode (off/on) so it's simple to use when you need light quickly. I tested it in a pitch black hallway over 60 ft long and it lights it up very well. The beam is easily zoomed in or out and you can do it with just one hand while in use. The clip is useful too, it just needed to be loosened up a bit so I could fit it onto my pocket. I bought this to use in my paranormal investigations and I could not be happier with it. The red beam is less harsh on the full spectrum/IR cameras and it doesn't mess up everyone's night vision like a white beam does.

I have only tested these out so far but hope to try them tonight or tomorrow night when my granddaughter and I use her new telescope for the first time. To reduce the brightness somewhat I use a AA rechargeable instead of a 14500. It is still VERY bright, but that is easy enough to deal with. The fact that it is single function is WONDERFUL! I don't know why the manufacturers of most inexpensive LED flashlights think people want all the modes like flashing, etc. I just want on and off, though a lower power option is nice too. But blinking is usually useless.

I'm one of several leaders for an organization that sponsors night hikes in a park. Our hikes take us on trails with a variety of hazards that we may not see in the dark, like loose gravel, rocks and boulders, holes, coyotes, one famous mountain lion, and cliffs that vary in width because of erosion. We try not to use lights, trusting our eyes to get used to the dark. But when we know we're on a part of the trail with hazards, we use red lights, which don't interfere with night vision: when you turn the light off after passing a hazard, you can still see. The beauty of this flashlight is that it has only one mode--red. I don't have to cycle through white lights, green lights, and blinking lights to get to the red light. This flashlight is palm-sized but when the battery is fully charged the light is bright enough to illuminate a large part of the trail, meaning it illuminates in terms of yards, not feet. It is perfect for night hikes.

This is a bright red light. This is the best way to navigate around a wooded disc golf course at night. My friends with their white lights are now retooling with these. Great for lighting up the basket and spotting those stray twigs and branches along the way.Fully zoomed, I can easily see objects over 200 feet away. This may be too bright for astronomers.Update 9/14/19:I am still happy with this for nighttime disc golf rounds. It is zoomable, simple on/off, just one AA battery, fits nicely in my front jeans pocket, and it still works. For only $8.99, I would replace it if this one fails.If you are looking for a variable light output for astronomers, I would recommend the Zebralight brand.

Had an earlier version of this which had off, on and strobe settings. I'm sure that's nice for some, but the strobe always was annoying for me. This is nicer, on off... and doesn't spoil my night vision. Great product

I love this flashlight format. I have had several over the years but this is the first Red LED Light one. I loved the idea that I would have one mode of light (RED) and not be blinded by the white light as I cycled through to the Red Light because the idea is to use red light to preserve your night vision when in dark environments so that you can continue to see the night sky when the light is turned off. However, I found this mini flashlight way too intense for my night vision.It was so bright that I had trouble seeing in the dark after the light was turned off. If I were looking for something to light up my hiking path, maybe this work work, but as a flashlight to look for gear and to set up or make adjustments to my night photography equipment, it was just too intense... so I returned it.

Maybe a little bright for astronomy but the adjustable lens makes the light narrow and bright or wide and dim which is useful for all cases. The casing is high quality also. I imagine I will have this for a while

It's a cute light, and seems sturdy enough. I bought it because I liked the idea of a simple light that did nothing but turn on and off--no multicolors, no flashing, just a nice, steady red light for night vision. However, flashing was *the* single mode of the one I received. Nothing but flashing. Really, the one function I wanted to avoid.
