Stain Pad - Original

I did not use these for staining, but rather for applying AquaCoat Clear Lacquer, a water-based finish that I use for guitars. I wanted a way to stack up clear coats without setting up then cleaning a spray system 3-4 times a day. This is THE PERFECT product for this finish. Take notes, 1A) Mix the AquaCoat with 12% General Finishes Extender 1B) Add TransTint "Dark Vintage Maple" to AquaCoat if you want a vintage lacquer look. 2) Cut the MāKRS Stain Pad to the opening size of your finish container 3) Apply to pad by tipping it on, wipe it in evenly with latex glove 4) Wipe on, don't worry about little bubbles as they will pop before it dries 5) Apply coats every hour or so, ~12 per day It applies remarkably even at .00013" per coat, so 35 coats is 4.5 thou, a "thin/vintage" lacquer thickness. You don't have to sand between coats, just plan to be stacking coats for 3 days straight, 12 per day. Let it cure for a week before wet sanding and polishing. This is how you replace an expensive and cumbersome Nitro Lacquer process with an affordable and easy water-based lacquer system.

The microfiber picked up enough stain for long strokes without drips or squeeze out. One pack of 2 gave me enough cut-to-size pieces to apply 3 coats of color and 4 coats of gloss to finish the guitar I was building. The glue used to bond the foam to itself is not highly solvent resistant, Naptha breaks it down, so beware if you plan to use this to clean your work piece with (like I did). I give these 4 stars because some lint was present after cutting, I had to rub the cut edge across a nitrile glove a few times to remove all the lint. Once I removed the lint from the cut however it did not continue to shed fibers. I will be ordering these again for my next project.

This is a really nice product. My first use was for a simple laundry cart i built to hold laundry stuff between washer and dryer. Cart is made out of Baltic Birch plywood and i sanded to 150. Simple cart not high end. moderately sanded. Lots of places for your wiping material to get "caught" on and snag and make the finishing more complicated than i needed it to be. This stuff was great! No snags. no dust, quick and easy application. Even after dropping on the ground a couple of times a quick brush off and back to work. I cant wait to use it on some nice pieces. Certainly difficult more difficult for me to determine if there were ANY lint falloffs but when looking at the flat finished side of the plywood i could not find any. Kept my simple project simple. Only used a piece that was 2x3 inches so plenty left over for future jobs. Nice product here - so happy to have found it. Beats crappy shop rags or shop paper towels. Highly recommend. I'll submit picture once i put on another coat and finish. 2 years later me still using this product. Definately my go to.

Falls apart instantly with oil based finishes.

Maybe for water based finish these work great, but I attempted with Arm-r-seal slightly thinned with paint thinner and it quickly delaminated and left behind material in the finish. It's a brilliant idea, but just fell apart when I used it. Ended up using car detailing microfiber wrapped around foam with stitched edges. They work great.

The description says, "Ideal applicator pad for all wood stains & sealers. Wipe on Poly, Water & Oil based stain, Gel stain, varnish, shellac, Tung oil, furniture polish, wax". However, I used this with "Varathane: Classic Penetrating Wood Stain" (a Rustoleum product with a petroleum base, sold at Home Depot), and things went south after about 10 minutes of staining. I've used this particular stain a lot and it works great on bare wood. It's my go-to for staining. This applicator pad was working out real well too for the first 10 min or so, but then I started seeing sticky, stain-colored blobs all over my door that I was staining. I had to stop and find some way of cleaning up the blobs which was tedious and aggravating. Thankfully it didn't ruin the staining process. Some investigating revealed that it was the foam core of the pad that was dissolving with the petroleum based stain and creating these sticky blobs. This pad is NOT compatible with solvents, despite the description. If you use it with a water based stain, though, you'll probably love it.

I love using these pads. The white wash was so easy to spread. It gave a nice even finish.

Used it to stain feast watson wipe on stain and poly. Happy with the results.

Das Pad kommt als ein grosses Stück und das Geheimnis ist, daß man es zerschneiden kann in kleinere Abschnitte von z.B.5x8 cm. Die sind aufgrund des Aufbaus aus Schaum und Microfaser wie ein schöner Pinsel. Wir haben 25 Stufen und 6m2 Flur mit nur einem Stück geölt. Keine nervigen Fussel, wie von Tüchern oder ausfallende Haare wie beim Pinseln. Tolles Produkt, welches einfach Spaß macht und funktioniert. Das Stück muss am Ende aber weggeworfen werden. Auswaschen geht nicht, weil es sich so vollsaugt.
