G17-BX Fire Grate, 17" W x 11.5" D x 5" H, Black

Updated review, reducing from initial five stars to current two stars. After one Michigan winter of heavy use (four cords of oak and ash) the unit sagged in the middle, making it difficult to clean ashes from beneath.After two Michigan winters (total eight cords of oak and ash) the middle third of the unit disintegrated completely. Cheap units from local stores lasted one year; this unit for twice the price lasted two. It happens to fit the firebox well, but if I can find anything else that fits, I'll buy that now, instead.[Original review: This is far more substantial than the cheesy equivalents I've burned up over the past two seasons (one from Lowe's, one from Tractor Supply) both of which crumpled in a few months. I’ve used this grate for 3 Vermont mountain winters and It is a game changer. It captures the embers above the fireplace floor leading to intense heat for BTU generation and ease of “tending the fire”. With this grate you literally just through a log on the fire once you get those embers glowing and each log burns evenly and consistently. See the inferno I create every tine we go skiing in the uploaded pic. I used 10 fatwoods to start and it’s been raging for 4-5 hours.Lots of different sizes to choose from and we chose the 24” (back) and it fits perfectly. Our FP is a standard size. I’m not sure how you could go wrong. Also... BTW... my grate came fully assembled and as a single cast iron piece. Your mileage may vary.

The previous steel great had melted through and I needed a replacement. This was the right height to give us a very good view of the fire, and fit perfectly in our fire box.We have a Fireplace Xtrordinair FXP 36.I didn't expect the much better burn of our wood with this. Now I only get ashes and no larger pieces of wood fa through.The downside is with those larger embers (I no longer get) in the ashes, I could get a fire that had burned out going again without a lighter. Now I need the lighter, but I'll take that given increased efficiency.This is pretty sturdy too, so cleaning is a bit more difficult, but I need to do it less.Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase.

From the moment I picked up the package from my front stoop, I knew that this grate was going to be a solid product. I purchased both the 7" and 5" high models, but opted to stick with the 7" high model. It looked better in my fireplace (higher firebox) and thought the extra height would allow more air flow allowing stronger fires. The grate itself is very sturdy and has some decent weight to it. I can see this piece lasting many, many years. My first fire in my new house. Will post again in a few months. Don't mind the logs in front of the grate (just had them delivered and was drying them out). This piece can hold multiple logs easily.

This was exactly what I was looking for! Fits perfectly inside the fireplace and with the bucket type design, it can hold more wood than my older grate with no worry that wood is going to fall off the sides like the traditional grates you find at local hardware stores (Lowes, HD, etc.) Made for a great fire on the night of arrival! My wife was warm and toasty and I didn't have to keep getting up loading wood in the fire!

I write very few reviews, but this is a great product. I've only had one fire, but made me think I should write one. I use the reviews to make product decisions, just trying to help you out. I had gone cheaper w my last grate, this one is worth a little extra. Great value.High clearance (4") for paper. My last one had ember catchers, but over time they sunk, so putting paper in was annoying that didn't have decent clearance. I thought that this design might not work as well, but I had SO much less ash after an 8 hour fire or so. Fire started easy - I wasn't sure about the design, the bars were thicker and there were more than I'm used to. Needless to say, very happy with my purchase. Not worried about durability, seems thick/well made.

Perfect for my Rumford fireplace!! Wood lasts a lot longer and doesn't burn so fast and hot. More steady afternoon burn. Should have bought one years ago. Tried a Great Wall of Fire, too much. Now it's sitting, all $250 of it, on my porch. Should have gotten this instead.

I got tired of wrought iron grates burning out in our fireplace. This cast iron grate is just what I was looking for, and the price is very, very reasonable.

This grate is replacing an old one that came with an outdoor cast iron fireplace. It fits perfect in the box (dimensions as described). Solid construction / fast delivery !

It does not get any better than this unit !
