The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories by Ernest Hemingway - Paperback

what am I going to say about a book this famous? wish it was longer, but so do many people about so many other things

This Hemmingway book is amazing, I'm trying to get into Hemmingway and a collection of short stories seemed to be the ideal way to go. The stories range in length of a couple of pages to about four or five, in total there's about twelve. More importantly there are pre stories before the main story begins, I found these pre stories fascinating, these were only about a couple of paragraghs in length, but I found them very absorbing, giving a great insight to the writings of Hemmingway. This isn't a book which will have you turning page after page in haste to find out what happens next, but rather an engrosing read where you can savour and devour every line of the wonderful prose which is the signature of Hemmingways style. As an introduction to Hemmingway this book is absolutely wonderful, it dosn't matter if you've read it before, this is the type of book that can be taken any where at anytime and be re-read. First class, I love it.

The Snows of Kilimanjaro をはじめ、18の短編集でしたが、どれも素晴らしい。短編集ではあるが、小編がそれぞれ主人公どうしつながっていて、大きな構成のなかで、ワンシーンを切り取ったような編集になって各作品が関連性のある小品です。壮大な自然の描写が巧い。とりたてて、おおげさな形容詞を使っていないのに、一見簡単な表現にみえて、無駄のない文章で、物語の背景、舞台となる自然と時代背景を浮かび上がらせる手法はさすが・・・と思います。第一次世界大戦前後のアメリカ、1914〜1919ごろのヨーロッパ各地、アフリカ・・・当時の社会情勢や経済事情、各国の事情、戦況、そんなものもすべて含めて、大きく自然を描いているが、あくまで表現はおおげさでなく、くどくなく、さらっと行間に挟むだけ。それでいて、ちゃんと、背景の風土と社会が伝わってくる・・・感動します。人間の心理においても。ぐだぐだ細かく説明しないのに、微妙な心理、感情がイキイキと伝わってきます。自然と、そこにおかれたニンゲンの配置の構図が、すごく、巧い。第一次世界大戦でヨーロッパの戦場を経験した兵士の、漠然とした人間性の喪失・・・挫折、絶望・・・ヨーロッパに出兵した兵士の痛手と虚無感と、故国の理解との隔たり・・・何度も読み返すほど味わいが深くなる。そういう表現方法に感動します。場面設定のスケールの大きさと、そこに存在する小さな人間の日々の小さな出来事とのかかわり、世間の現実感、そこに緻密さがないと雑でつめの甘い三文小説になると思いますが、18の短編のどれもが、人物の会話に緊張感があり、場面との配置にずれがない。リアリズムを欠く隙間がない。こういう簡単な文章で、緻密に大きな世界を描ける作家は少ない気がする。アメリカ人の文学だな〜〜と。たしかに、そこかしこに、アメリカを感じさせる文体だと思います。
