Runs hot, new microcode may have solved the issue
The Intel 13th and 14th generation i7 and i9 unlocked CPUs have had a difficult time recently due to overvoltage under idle or light load. Hopefully this has been resolved by the microcode updates. Both CPUs have a reputation for being difficult to cool, and requiring AIO water cooling. Get the cooling right and these are still good CPUs for gaming and productivity. The i7-14700K is a good cost / performance mix and works well with Z790 motherboards. Z890 motherboards have a different socket, and no longer use DDR4 and PCIe Gen 4 NVMe. Although I'm not a gamer, my everyday self-build computers are always gaming motherboards with overclocked unlocked Intel CPUs, as they are reliable. I might have been pushing my luck with this build. ROG STRIX Z790-H Gaming Wi-Fi motherboard, i7-14700K CPU with Noctua NH-D15 air cooler and, Team Group DDR5 7200MHz memory. The Noctua heat pipes clash with the VRM heatsink, so the Noctua big cooler has to be swung through 90 degrees: see the first photo. I use the integrated graphics, so the placement of a graphics card wasn't an issue. The second photo shows the UEFI BIOS screen. CPU at 5900MHz, DDR5 memory at 7200MHz, CPU at 39 degrees C, motherboard at 28 degrees C, XMP1 profile enabled. At idle, it consumes around 45 watts; the PSU is an EVGA 650 P2 Platinum rated.

Temps and undervolting
Works great once you set your voltage and limits. Was getting 19k in Cinebench 23 with an aluminum cooler and no lapping and instant thermal throttle and no voltage set, after lapping and getting a better cooler with good undervolt I got to 23k and 85c TJMax idle high 30c compared to old mid 40 idle and 100c under full load👍 used contact frame for both old used ptm from thermal grizzly new used kpxPaired with rtx4070 fe that was manually overclocked.

Great upgrade
I was having drops in kill zone rpcs3 10k resolution with my 12400, and my fps would drop to 40s and back to 60. With my 12700, I hardly get any drops using the same resolution. Timespliters dolphin 8k I got drops using 12400. I no longer get those using the 12700. LFD2 would give me drops to the 60s from 120fps using multiple graphic mods using a 3080 RTX/12400. I no longer get those big drops with the 12700. This card is a monster. I didn't expect it to stabilize my FPs so much, but I was hoping it did,Also, running malware/spyware scans takes the same amount of files. 10 minutes for malware, 20 for spyware using this monster, using my old chip takes 40 minutes for malware, 1 hour for spyware.
