Cezanne: Drawings and Watercolours

An opportunity missed?
The preface to this book clearly defines the authors intentions and in the main it is successful in meeting his aims. There is a good balance of text and reproductions, the former of which covers the ground and is accessible without being patronising, the latter of which there are a large number. The big disappointment for me is the reproductions, or, more accurately, their size. The book is well produced generally but the problem is the format (245 x 160 mm) - which is close to the traditional T&H paperback format and feels slightly 'old fashioned'.. This is fine for books that are a general overview but in this case the scale and quality of the reproductions seriously compromises appreciation of the work being referenced and discussed. Basically the book should have been larger! Annoyingly, best use has not been made of what space s available and there are plenty of blank space that would have allowed larger reproductions. The nature of the work shown means that it would have even been possible to reproduce some actual size and there are number of instances where this could have been achieved. Few will quibble at another addition to the literature of Cezanne, and maybe I have missed the point of this not inexpensive book, but I think the author and Cezanne's glorious work have not been very well served by T&H; it feels like an opportunity missed and is hard to wholeheartedly recommend.

Very good collection of pictures usually hard to find.
The paintings are great, of course, but you really start to understand Cèzanne when you deal with the drawings and works on paper...

Another Lloyd success.
Excellent. So many detailed and interesting issues and links with contemporaries. A brilliant read and even better than the similar book about Degas. This is my third purchase by Christopher Lloyd and can only recommend his books.
