I had an urge to have some binoculars, having been able to use someone else’s whilst travelling. These are a trusted brand with great optics and good magnification at this price. I first used them at an air show and found they gave great clarity and enabled me to see flying stunts so much better. I think these will last a long time and are a worthwhile investment.

I’ve been using Nikon Monarchs for years now (8x42) for hunting, and they spoiled me. My eyes refuse to look through junk lenses. When I wanted another set to enjoy birds in the backyard, I wanted something in 12 power and I didn’t want to break the bank. I tried several inexpensive but highly rated models on Amazon and found them to be what I would consider ‘toys’. When I found the Celestron 12x50 ED for far less than the comparable Nikon, i thought them worth a try. Celestron has a solid reputation For their telescopes and I was confident they know lenses. When I ordered, they we’re out of stock and expected in two weeks. To my surprise, they arrived from Amazon within a week. My first impression out of the box was that they felt like good quality equipment. I proceeded to the backyard with both the Celestron and my trusty Monarchs for a quick view and comparison. I was very pleased. The Celestron 12x50 ED’s were every bit as sharp and crisp as my more expensive monarchs (8x42), with good eye relief and smooth easy focus. Colors seemed slightly deeper through the Nikons (greens in particular), but it’s very close and could be due to the Celestron’s larger objective, where by a slightly brighter image may have drown some tint of deeper color to my perception, as later in the day I found that initial impression more difficult to verify. I found target acquisition slightly more difficult with the 12x magnification’s smaller field of view, but I expected that. If I could only have one pair, I’d stick with 8x for their versatility. On a tripod the 12x Celestron’s work beautifully for cellphone photography. I also plan to use these to stargaze via a tripod. I haven’t done that yet, but I have used them freehand. At 12x they are shakey as to be expected, but they do soak up some starlight. I expect them to provide some wonderful views when properly mounted.

Background: I'm an amateur backyard astronomer and a professional academic astrodynamics researcher who does both backyard stargazing and nature observation during hiking trips. I already own a large 25x100 telescope, so I needed quality handheld binoculars that could complement that setup for target acquisition and general viewing. The Nature DX ED 10x50 binoculars are a versatile tool that can be used for both astronomy and nature observation, making them a perfect addition to my equipment. Why I Chose These: After extensively comparing options, including the Nikon PROSTAFF P7 10x42, Vortex Diamondback HD, and other Celestron models, I opted for the Nature DX ED primarily due to its ED glass technology. I also researched premium brands like Swarovski, Zeiss, and Nikon's Monarch series, but the Nature DX ED delivers 90-95% of their optical performance at a fraction of the cost. The extra-low dispersion glass was the deciding factor - chromatic aberration is noticeably reduced when viewing bright stars and the moon, and this virtually eliminates it. The value for money is exceptional, making it a wise investment for both amateur astronomers and nature observers. First Impressions: Sharp right out of the box. The build quality feels solid without being overly heavy (about 1.75 lbs). The case is actually valid (not just throwaway packaging), and the neck strap is not just comfortable, but also ensures that you can wear the binoculars for extended periods without any discomfort. The 8.2-foot close focus is fantastic for wildlife - much better than many 10x binoculars, which typically won't focus closer than 15 feet. Optical Performance: The ED glass delivers exceptionally well. I tested these on double stars like Albireo, and there's virtually no colour fringing - something that was immediately noticeable with cheaper binoculars. Lunar craters are crisp and well-defined. The 50mm objectives gather noticeably more light than 42mm alternatives, making them excellent for dawn/dusk observation when wildlife is most active—honestly, the image quality rivals that of binoculars costing three to four times more. Field Use: At 28oz, they're heavier than some alternatives, but still very manageable for backpacking. The wider field isn't as broad as some competitors, but the image quality more than compensates. I've used them for 2-hour stargazing sessions handheld without significant fatigue. Pros: - ED glass eliminates chromatic aberration - Excellent low-light performance - Sharp edge-to-edge clarity - Good close focus for nature observation - Quality accessories included - Great value for ED glass technology - Performance comparable to much more expensive brands Cons: - Heavier than roof prism alternatives - The field of view is narrower than some 10x42 models - Price point higher than basic binoculars (but worth it) Bottom Line: The Nature DX ED binoculars offer a perfect balance between performance and price. The ED glass technology makes a noticeable difference in optical performance. After researching a wide range of options, from budget to premium European brands, I found that these binoculars offer the best value for money. If you're looking for serious optical performance without the premium price tag, these are an excellent choice. They are perfect for anyone who does both astronomy and nature observation. Recommendation: Buy these if optical quality matters more than the absolute minimum weight. Skip them if you need the lightest possible option for ultralight backpacking.
