The magnet is only magnetic on one end, (silver). The other three sides are sealed and have no magnetic properties.

there is only one magnet per latch. It is located at the end of the spring loaded metal carrier that is shown extended in the open position.

Q: Will this work on a 15 pound mdf door? i need to hold them secure so there is no gap and also want them to softly latch if possible.

I think a 15lb door is too heavy for these latches. While they may latch the door, they would likely not push the door out far enough when trying to open.
