Q: what causes the dot to be bright or light up in the dark?

Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, and it does not glow in the dark. As it decays slowly into helium, it emits electrons (called beta decay). The inside of the tiny vial in the sight is coated with a phosphor. When the tritium electrons hit the phosphor, the phosphor emits the light; this is called fluorescence. Some extra info: There are many phosphors, but none of them contain phosphorus. They contain various elements such as zinc, copper, sulfur, etc. Different combinations emit different colored light. The tritium has a half-life of about 13 years. Therefore, after 13 years, only half of the tritium in the gun sight will remain. This does not necessarily mean that the sight will be only appear half as bright to your eyes in total darkness; it is possible that it will seem nearly as bright as when you bought it. I can better answer this in 13 years.Sorry for the long answer.

Q: Will this fit my GP100 made by Ruger?

no. the lcr uses a side-to-side pin to hold the sights; the gp100 has a sprung pin that works from the front.

Q: Does this sight come with a new pin? The factory pin has sharp burs, needs to be replaced...

Yes, it comes with a new pin. I suggest that you carefully Bevel one end of the Pin on an Arkansas Stone or similar device so as to allow smootherentry of the Pin into the Sight / Tenon. I used a $30.00ish OptiVisor (magnifying lens attached to a head visor - check Amazon) so I could see to do this.Using the OptiVISOR will also help you see better to install the pin. The Visor is an incredible aid in All Gunsmithing activities !

Q: Does this still come with the 1/16th punch?

I bought mine more than 3 years ago. According to XS website the 1/16 punch is included, so you should be ok. It’s not the sturdiest punch, but it gets the job done.
