Excellent quality sharpener
That is my favorite pastel pencil sharpener. It is very gentle but sharpens to a nice point. The size is small, so you really need to put this somewhere it can't get lost. It works really well for charcoal pencils as well.

Game changer
Really does what it says - sharpens your charcoal and pastel pencils with much less breakage than standard sharpeners. I never liked working with these types of pencils because I prefer the sharp points achievable with graphite and colored pencils, in order to render fine details. Now I will revisit my choice, and start working again especially with pastel pencils. You won't get the same degree of sharpness as with graphite or colored pencils, but you'll get a lot closer than with standard sharpeners. As far as breakage, that hasn't been a problem with my pastel pencils, but it is a little tricky with extra-soft charcoal pencils (not medium however). So, you may have to back off when the point is "sharp enough", and not go for an ultra-sharp point. As for the value for the money, it's true that the price seems too high for a little piece of plastic. But if it is the only way to get the sharpness you want, then it's worth it.

It works better than the 50¢ sharpener I have.
This thing actually sharpens my charcoal and pastel pencils. The other sharpener I have breaks everything to pieces every time. It's kind of small though, which isn't always a good thing.

Works but expensive
I gave it three stars because: it doesn't really "sharpen" your pencils (pastels/charcoal.) It just shaves some of the wood away from the core. It's very small and looks like an elementary school sharpener. It's extrememly expensive for what it is. It actually hurts my hands while sharpening (I have arthritis and tendonitis.) I purchased it because of the brand name and I had to have something to sharpen the pencils. 3 stars for the fact that it is sharp enough to shave away the wood & core because my colored pencil sharpener just breaks the medium off. Not very good value for what it costs, though.

Fits Conté a Paris pastel pencils
It fits the Conté a Paris pastel pencils (Crayon pastel), and it sharpens them well.

Definitely not for pastel pencils
The pencils constantly break in this, no matter how slow or gentle I go. I just use a knife to whittle away the wood from the pastel pencils. This wasn't expensive but I'm a bit disappointed it didn't do well. I might try it with my regular pencils. Someday. I do have an electric sharpener for those.

The sharpener makes me feel smart again, while others made me feel stupid
The sharpener works great on charcoal pencils. I tried several other sharpeners that claimed to be good at it… and they all made me feel stupid with their poor results. With the sharpener, I was able to quickly sharpened several charcoal pencils, and show that in my photo. It gave great results on several brands of charcoal pencils, including some that I had given up on because the pencils themselves got poor marks for being fragile. The sharpener seemed to do well on all the brands. All my charcoal pencils are useful again. I really like to use white charcoal pencils for layout lines on dark lumber. Before the sharpener, the only effective technique for sharpening that I had found was whittling. The sharpener gives an inexpensive option that is even better than whittling.
