Q: Are the arms removable and so it can be used without them?

I would say NOT. The arms are screwed into the back and the seat so as to support the back. We bought 2 and wanted one of them without arms, so we made a template in wood of just the bottom of the plastic arms and attached that to the back and the seat - works well. They are very comfy chairs. Hope this helps
