So Far So Good!
Moved into a new house this summer and it came with a backyard pond/waterfall set-up. There are several gold fish in the pond and I bought this to keep the ice from freezing in the winter. I did buy the “cage” accessory that is sold separately. So far this has done what it is supposed to do. We have had some really cold weather here in Maryland this winter and the heater kept the pond from freezing up. The fish seem to love it, seeing they are always around it. Because we have dogs that we take out in the yard each day we are able to check this to ensure it is working, and I have a back-up heater on the shelf in case this one stops working. I’ll be happy if it gets through the winter, but again, so far so good and its doing the job.

Does not work.
Followed all instructions, put this in pond. It "sizzled" for a minute then never worked, never heated the pond at all. At least it didn't kill my fish.

stock tank, pond heater
heater works fine but disappointed that it came with 6 foot cord and not 15 as stated in description, yes others said this and still others got the 15 foot cord. now have to order extention cord made by the company, seems like a scam.

Satisfied
So far so good. I purchased for my small fish pond. I got tired of bringing my fish in every winter and cleaning an aquarium. It is working just fine and my fish are alive.

Works great, but with limitations
Last winter I bought the 1500 watt "tank deicer" version of this heater. It worked great...for a very short time. But it did get my pond thru a cold snap, and I learned a few things about these heaters. My pond is roughly 1,000 gallons, and I keep the pump/skimmer/biofalls running 24/7/365. Here in PA, it definitely gets cold enough to freeze. If it were to freeze up completely, it would burn up the pump. So what have I learned about these heaters? Well for starters, they don't last long. Plan on buying a new one every year. Also, with this brand, the "tank deicer" version has a very short cord. The "pond deicer" version has a nice, long cord. Another thing I learned was that you don't need the guard if you tie it off in a way that prevents it from touching the sides of the pond. But, the best thing that I learned is placement is key. These are only meant to keep a hole open for gas exchange. But I found that if I place it right in front of the skimmer, the pond will circulate the warmed water thru the system and down the falls, and keep the entire pond unfrozen. It works so well that this year, the 1000 watt version has kept my pond ice free even during an extended stretch with temps WELL below freezing. Oh, one more thing: If you can, plug the heater into a separate circuit from the pump. That way when the heater eventually fails (which it will) it won't kill your pump if it trips the circuit breaker.

Best winter heater for ponds
I have been using these for years for keeping my pond defrosted during the winter. Lately I am only able to find the 6ft cord. This 15ft cord is a life saver, it gets out more in the middle if the pond and keeps the wild life from hand picking my fish, when they gather for warmth.

This heater works!
We suffered a particularly cold winter this year. This heater kept our pond open, free from dangerous ice. I used this heater years ago, for a period of years and it too worked well. I'd have continued to use it, but my husband discarded it by mistake. You must remember to purchase the Guard/floater with the heater. Using another style heater earlier in the season was almost a disaster. It is designed to keep a small hole open in the ice for the toxins to escape from the pond. The ice forming in the pond pushed the heater above the water eliminating any benefit. This heater works and is a good value. Hope this helps in your decision.

Works fine. Have had one previously that lasted for years. Highly recommend for anyone with a small backyard pond that needs to be kept open in winter.

I ordered this to thaw out a septic holding tank, it was received very fast and quality looks good but further research found that it is not legal to use them for this purpose. So I will probably end up returning it.

Works as stated. We use it to keep our pond water from freezing in a very cold climate.

This was the 2nd de-icer for our small backyard fish pond. The first crapped out within 2 years, and only used it in the winter. The new one we have, seems to be working so far. Always a good idea to have a spare on hand. We also set it up on a timer, and that may help it last. It does get calcium build up on it, and needs cleaning between uses.
