Real Life of Lillo Brancato has Turned Tragic
I am writing this long overdue review shortly after the real life arrest of Lillo Brancato in the connection of a murder of a New York City police officer. He played the young man in this splendid movie which deserves to be seen by everybody. It is a beautifully written and acted production. Brancato portrayed so accurately the challenges of a young Italian-America youth being raised among the gangsters in his blue collar community. I always wondered why he virtually disappeared. Brancato's small role playing a cheap gangster on "The Sopranos" didn't even begin to equal what had earlier been expected of him.Robert Di Niro is fantastic as the father, a proud bus driver, trying to make sure his only son remains a law abiding citizen. Chazz Palminteri is likewise brilliant playing the role of the neighborhood Mafia chieftain. He also wrote the spellbinding script. "A Bronx Tale" apparently was only modestly successful. I simply cannot understand why it isn't considered as one of the very best movies of that time period. This is a family movie. Anyone who is a teenager or older should enjoy it immensely. You truly feel like you are visiting the 1960s. It is a warm and loving story about choices that must be made early in one's life. Lastly, why hasn't Di Niro directed more films? You would think that this particular work of art might encourage the great actor to work more often behind the camera.

a fun movie. Interesting bit of trivia...............
Well acted, great local scenes of The Bronx, plausible. Good story. De Niro is fantastic in a different sort of role as a hard working, earnest, honest bus driver just trying to show his son a decent way to live. Parmentieri is fantastic as the local crime boss-very believable.Deals with good/bad themes, easy money vs.integrity & hard work, racism & racial clashes in the paradigm of The Bronx.Great musical score.Note: Lillo Brancato should've stuck to acting. Currently in prison according to a web search."In December 2005, he was arrested and hospitalized after he and a friend, Steven Armento, were shot by an off-duty police officer Daniel Enchautegui while the officer was investigating a burglary in New York City. The officer was killed, and Armento got sentenced to life-time prison for murder, while Brancato was only sentenced to ten years for attempted burglary. In December, 2008, he was cleared of second degree murder in the shooting of police officer Daniel Enchautegui, but was convicted of attempted burglary. Releases in 2008 he stars in the Sopranos.Sentenced to 10 years in prison on January 9, 2009, for his burglary conviction that led to the the murder of a police officer."

A powerful father and son relationship dynamic
Great movie, needless to say, almost a flawless picture. The only negative I could say is that this movie is so good it almost could not be replicated for any other genre, all the plot devices could only work in this premise, a seedy underground italian mafia new york crime drama. Great movie!Besides how great this movie is, this particular DVD is sadly low quality. There needs to be a Blu Ray print of this, perhaps I am unaware of at the moment but this DVD picture quality is horrendous. What a shame. I recently watched this on a multimedia projector and the aspect ratio of this dvd is probably 4:3, but the widescreen presentation was sandwiched inside that constraint. If I'm not mistaken, i had to use the projector's digital zoom function to enlarge the picture area. Anyway, crappy video quality for an outstanding film, what a shame!

Not only a great movie, but a developmentally important one.
I think Robert DeNiro should have gotten an Oscar for his performance in this movie.I showed this movie to my students in a high school health course (with permission from parents since it is "R" rated).Groups of usually ebullient students sat quietly transfixed throughout the movie. Comments were universally good. More importantly, follow-up discussion often displayed thoughts and insights previously uncharacteristic of the age group. The developmental importance of this at this age cannot be overstated. (See "Forms of Ethical and Intellectual Development in the College Years" by William Perry of Harvard. What he describes occurs also in high schools.)Even if you as an adult watch this movie alone, I doubt you will be able to press the pause button. I also suspect you will be recommending it to friends.Sadly, Netflix, Redbox, and Blockbuster Express either don't have it or won't get it to you anytime soon.It is not expensive and well worth purchasing while there are still copies out there.
