Good for a first book on a new tech, but is already dated
When Google Wear and Fit came out in 2015, I searched far and wide for an introductory text that could answer the questions that I had about both of these cutting-edge technologies. This was the first book released to the market for either technology; I purchased it with high hopes due its promise to deliver on both at the same time. I stopped reading it about half way though, as the business need for my understanding the tech was deprioritized. I have just finished it now, since this is being revisited.Pros: This book is very high on theory. For a programmer new to Bluetooth LE/Smart or even IoT, the new concepts of human-area networking and others are important and can be highly educational. (Less so for experienced engineers.) The quick overview of Android programming is usable as fast introduction, done well enough that I would recommend this for someone looking for a refresher. The section on USB and Bluetooth debugging is valuable and I've already put both into practice.Neutral: While the language can be difficult to work through at times the errata page does compensate. The book has little exposition of code, likely due to the lightweight nature of the Wear and Fit APIs. The included class diagrams are useful but are a non-standard way of demonstrating coding patterns.Cons: The meat of the book is contained entirely in chapters 7 and 9, and the reader is left with questions on how to connect the high theory of the earlier chapters with the API information as given.Given the information provided, this book could have been shorter. I recommend the earlier chapters for anyone interested in theory on the future development of IoT.This was a well timed product, but unless a new edition is published this edition will have modest value. While I would recommend serious programmers to look elsewhere for a more technical detail on the APIs, the only alternative is the Android documentation where much of the theory presented here is lost.
