The Defence of Lucknow - author unknown
Just read the book "The Defence of Lucknow". In all, a very good inside look at day to day life during the seige of Lucknow in 1857. I was a little disappointed that the narrative finished half way through on September 25th 1857 with still 2 months of the seige to go. No mention of the 1st Liberation that failed, or the 2nd liberation under General Colin Campbell, or the homeward journey in late November back to Cawnpore. Also, practically nothing said of the 50 strong, La Martiniere boys and there Masters roll in the defence of the Residency, for which each student received the Indiam Mutiny Lucknow Defence Medal. Vertually no maps or diagrams either. But not a bad read and covers much about the tunelling and mining conducted by both the Mutineers and the British defenders. Would have given 5 starts if the narrative was completed through to November and liberation. However, I do highly recommend a delicious read and historic novel set in Oudh 1857, is called ZEMINDAR by Vallery Fitzgerald, certainly worth 5 stars and about 900 pages worth...
