Q: How do you set the calendar date?

Pull dial all the way out push half way back in turn dial forward to set date

Q: what is the battery number?

Not sure, but I would think that it takes a typical flat round watch battery. I bought a pack of variety flat round batteries at the Dollar store. Usually works on my other watches. Watch is nice for the price.

Q: Is the luminosity constant as with a tritium dial, or does it need light to work as with glow in the dark?

"It needs light to work -- " not very satisfactory. It's a cheap watch, One should never have high expectations of a cheap watch! But it worked fine -- for awhile. I had to replace it (with another cheap watch, I got two of the same versions.)

Q: To replace a battery does the back pop off or screw off?

I do not replace the battery. At this price, I just order a new watch. It is cheaper
