I was pleasantly surprised.
OK, first off, I'm rather pleased with how well the Edwin Jagger DES89BL worked. I have been using a Baili for the last few years and it has not always been an easy shave, not to mention that the razor has been corroding, becoming increasingly difficult to change blades. I used Jagger for the first time on my three-day old beard. Now I'm not sure if the ease of the razor that I used was due to the razor or the razor blade that I used which was a Derby as opposed to the Astra which I normally use for the Baili however I must admit it was a pleasant experience. The razor was buttery smooth, a pleasure to use and believe it or not, for a new razor to not nick me, I'm amazed. So, I just wanted to say I'm rather pleased and I can only hope this continues. We'll see. The razor is more of an entry level, with the shave being mild, however, if you're in a hurry it is the perfect razor because if you are in a hurry you do not have to worry about getting a nick. The razor looks good, is well made, with the construction being very solid.

Aesthetics and craftsmanship = A+ Pragmatism and Utility = C
In terms of aesthetics and craftsmanship, this English Edwin Jagger safety razor is beautiful with its shiny chrome finish and distinctive sharp closed-comb look. The short handle, while a bit unwieldy, reminds me of a classic Zippo lighter. That said, I have a few reservations. The short handle makes it a bit slippery. If your hand is wet at all, you must be mindful to maintain a solid grip. This makes it hard to disassemble quickly to clean the razor blade underneath which will be gunked up with hair and shaving cream after each use. I find I have to dry my hands completely and take it into the living room to disassemble and put it back together. The three piece design means I have to make sure that I can see the edges of the closed comb while looking at it from above in order to put it together correctly. The "butterfly" opening mechanism in my one piece WEISHI safety razor is much more efficient for cleaning and removing the razor blade. The closed comb makes it so the blade isn't very aggressive. I understand this is for beginners, but I have a Chinese WEISHI safety razor that is also for beginners that is much sharper and efficient than this. With this Jagger, I often have to go over an area several times for an efficient shave. Just today, I used my WEISHI to finish the job. This Edwin Jagger Safety Razor is a work of art, but it is not particularly practical as far as safety razors go. If you are an absolute beginner, I recommend a WEISHI safety razor.

Mild and Close
The Razor in the image is not the EJ DES89 but it is the same size for comparison. The DE 89 is a great compact razor. The handle is slick so you need to make sure you keep your hands fairly soap free or have a good grip. Its mild but still efficient. You "can" cut yourself with this but its very "safe". I purchased this for the ultra compact size for the Altoid kit (see photo) perfect Christmas gift for my Buddies.

Perfect for Beginners
This razor and straight-razor shaving came repeatedly recommended off a youtube channel that I follow. In particular, this was recommended for being "gentle" and for providing a smooth, irritation-free shaving experience, especially to whom is new to this style of shaving. This particular model is the second one I own, which says quite a bit about how much I'm enjoying it. I do find it easy to use and, especially when I shave in the shower, I did find it to be not irritating at all (I don't even need to use an aftershave anymore). Compared to a regular razor, even the fanciest types with 4-5 blades, I find this to be infinitely more convenient and pleasurable, and I'd definitely buy it again. In fact, there's no way I'm going back to multiple blades razors.

Nice razor with questionable threads
The media could not be loaded. This is my first safety razor. I purchased it because a lot of reviews on Reddit said the Edwin Jagger razor had a very high-quality finish: nice machining, nice plating... But the first one I ordered had poorly cut threads, and the threaded stud was not parallel with the pins. It tightened up okay, but there was a lot more play while screwing the handle on than there should have been. I requested a replacement and Amazon obliged. The threads on the new one are cut better, but it still has the same amount of play while screwing the handle on. It tightens up okay, but I'm expecting it won't take long to strip the threads because there's not much of the threads mating. I was originally planning on replacing the stock handle with a stainless steel knurled handle, but based on the way the threads are cut I don't think I will because I'm not sure how it will fit. Aside from the issue with the threads I quite like it! I've been shaving with it for several weeks and I enjoy it! It seems to give me a close shave with less irritation than my cartridge razor. The chrome plating is beautiful, and so far I don't mind the smooth handle and haven't had any issues holding onto it.
