Fun and easy to assemble with my child
A lot of fun to assemble with my kid, and watch the robot move across the table. Recently my daughter has become interested in robots. She'll use a robotic voice to say "I am a robot" and walks around very stiffly. This kit was fun for her to open and help with some of the parts, She's not yet 8 but she was able to help with a few of the steps. I ended up having 1 extra screw, but the instructions only use 4 of the 5. I am using these batteries (only need 1 AAA) AmazonBasics AAA Performance Alkaline Batteries for this kit. The robot isn't too good with corners of square tables, but does just fine along the straight edges. This is our first 4M Science Kit, but have already ordered 4M KidzLabs Robo Bug Mecho Motorized Kit which looks easier to build and better for a younger child to build.

Well worth the price we paid.
My 9-year-old and I built this together this morning. She did most of the work, while I did most of the reading and showed her how to identify parts using the diagram. Frankly, I felt a tad overwhelmed when she first opened the instructions, so I said we might have to wait for Dad to come help. Then my younger son said “Yeah, you’re probably going to have to wait for dad to build something like that,” to which I replied “No, we can do it, we just need to take it step by step.” Truly, once we looked over the peices and diagram, the instructions were easier to follow than I thought. Neither my daughter or I had put something like this together before. Our robot (which she named “Scooter”) turned out great. My daughter was thrilled and very proud of herself. A priceless experience. I will say Scooter does a good job detecting the edge but does fall off the table. You have to follow the directions about placing it slightly diagonal to the edge from the center of the table. When it falls some peices fall off, but she just puts it back together again.

Potato power!
This is a fascinating gift for kids. The clock actually works when they follow directions. They can try different energy sources as well.

Nice kit for kids, clock is a little finicky.
A gift for a 10+ kid who is into science. I am familiar with the potato clock set-up, but it seems that a novice could also follow the instructions with ease. May need an adult to help twist the wires onto the copper and zinc conductors (similar to a thread-the-needle technique). You have two options to set this up: 1) buy two potatoes, or 2) use soda in the included plastic cups. Both methods yield the same result, but the soda method can be tedious. If the conductors touch inside the cup of soda, then the experiment does not work. Lots of DIY videos online using zinc nails and pennies if you need to grasp the basic concept. Only gripe is that the clock could be a little more user-friendly. It doesn't sit upright on its own and doesn't have the "press and hold" feature for set-up that most clocks/watches do. Therefore, if it tips over or you have an accidental bump of the wrong button, it will probably reset. May want to create your own labels for the two clock buttons to aid the youngsters.

Second time I buy it
I bought it last year for my kids and I knew it was a must to add it to my gift basket with the theme of Science Experiments. It is easy to use and a fun way to teach about electrify and Anode Cathode concept.

Good learning, connection wouldn't hold
This was fun to put together with my nieces and nephews but it didn't hold a connection no matter what I used for a cell (potatoes, juice, etc). I tried endlessly to get the connections to stay but the clock would constantly reset. I'm not sure if that was something defective with the product but I tried everything they recommended for trouble shooting, including weighting. I was going to take it apart from the clock and hook it up to a lightbulb but couldn't find a tiny enough screwdriver. Its a good learning activity but isn't keep-able because the connection won't hold so the kids lost interest.
