read before you see the movie
Both purchased and read before viewing the movie and I was glad I did. It contains no spoilers other than Steve hiller(Will Smith) is dead,I don't consider that a spoiler however. What it contains though is a rich back story to all the new and loved character's that show in the movie. Instead of being blasted with who are these people, were did they come from, how did this all this happen in the theater,I could follow the movie more clearly while quietly explaining it to my sister so it filled in the gaps.overall great book but the producers should either have added some of this history to the IDR movie itself or not relied so heavily on a prequel book to set the stage.

The Missing Pieces
Okay. Not my favorite book. But it certainly filled the bill for missing information. We watched, as usual, Independence Day on, yep, July fourth. I wanted to watch our DVD but the machine ate the DVD. Luckily, the show was on Live TV. We recorded so we could watch when we could get together as a group at the same time. We, also, recorded ID Resurgence. Getting all four of us in the same room at the same time is rare. So we barely got ID finished on 7/4. IDR happened on the fifth. We'd seen Resurgence before and were unimpressed. This time we seemed to be more into the identifying stars and characters from before. That's when we noticed that there were characters that seemed to be important but were unknown to us.My husband watches shows with Google ready. It was when I asked him who is that and why are they supposed to be important? I don't remember them from ID.This book is the missing piece. Though it isn't exciting enough to have a movie of its own, without it Resurge keeps you wondering. Maybe this should have been a series of three one hour shows? At any rate, this helped make the final show make more sense. On the other hand, I am no more interested to rewatch Resurgence now that I know what I do. And it seems this could have the possibility of another movie or two as we learn more about aliens of all kinds and the hope of global cooperation. So, it's worth the read.

Great plot - Wish I would have read this prior to seeing ID Resurgence
I enjoyed this story's plot, especially how it answers a lot of the follow-up questions that any viewer might have when seeing the end of the first Independence Day movie. There are a lot of key plot points in Resurgence that are vaguely explained. This book provides the backstory necessary that would make Resurgence a far more enjoyable movie, especially when it concerns to trying to care about the newer characters who were absent from the first movie. I wish I would have read this prior to seeing Independence Day Resurgence.

and I'm glad I read it before watching the new one because ...
This book bridges the time between the end of ID4 and the new movie, and I'm glad I read it before watching the new one because it better set up some of the history and relationships that are sprung on the audience in the movie. As a novel, it's passable. It covers a twenty-year timespan, so it's got some timehops, but it works OK in that respect. It's also not too long. I do think that it caught some of the character voices pretty well. If you're a fan of the Independence Day universe, it's worth a read.

I dislike reading. Not that I have ADD
Let me start by saying this: I dislike reading. Not that I have ADD, it's just something I've never enjoyed despite multiple efforts. Still, the desire to know what happened for the past twenty years in this official prequel to Resurgence was too tempting, so I had to give it a shot. The result: I read it faster than any book ever before. I was so engrossed in the characters, especially Dikembe Umbutu - such a badass! There were some slow spots, namely some throwaway teen romance banter, but it does not ruin anything in the least. Want to know what happened to Steven Hiller and Constance Spano? You'll ind out what happened to everyone and get a better understanding of the new people who are introduced in Resurgence, not to mention a thorough description of what has happened to surviving aliens and their technology. A definite must!

The story was worth the 20 year wait - excited for the movie!
A great novel to fill in the gap of the last 20 years of this alternate universe, and to be totally honest, since I finished the book I'm now a reincarnation of my former 10-year-old self in stupidly high anticipation the sequel to hit the theaters this week (which my order of the actual movie novelization is coming on Tuesday and I'm really going to have to restrain myself not to read it before Thursday!). Started off a little slow with introducing a new main character - there are three newbies plus their supporting characters and are great additions by the way. As always when reading books from a new author, getting used to the style took a few chapters - but the direction they took the story was worth the wait. Already have my front row center IMAX tickets in hand for the movie.

I'm glad that I read this book
I'm glad that I read this book, and the "Independence Day:Resurgence" novel before seeing the "Independence Day:Resurgence" movie. If I hadn't, a lot of things in the movie wouldn't have made sense. It was an advantage to have information that I learned in the back story of both novels, to make the movie more enjoyable. So if you plan on seeing the movie, do yourself a favor and read this prequel AND the movie novel, preferably before seeing the movie. If you wait to read both books after seeing the movie, you might find yourself saying several times, "Oh, wow, so THAT'S why he did that", or, "Ohhh, OK, so that's what happened and why they...." The books go into so much more detail than the movie, and when I did watch the movie, it seemed so rushed.

Good if you want to fill in the 20 year gap.
This book tells of the events between ID4 and Resurgence using separate dates. It introduces new characters like Jake Morrison, Dikembe Umbutu, and Catherine Marceaux. The kids from ID4 grow up and the adults adjust to a post-alien world, planning on their return. It does a good job setting up for the sequel, but reading this isn't necessary for the movie, it's just supplemental. If there's on real complaint, it's the character of Charlie. In April 2004, he's said to be 10. In February 2005, he's 12, and he's still 12 in April 2007. Bit sloppy writing.

ID episode 1.5
Maybe some spoilers...This was a bridging story. A so-so story rammed between two other very different, arguably more action-intense film-ready stories They saved all the good-times-world-ending destruction for the big screen. They saved all the great alien-fighting action for the visual medium. And they barely blew anything up at all. This novel was actually mostly relationships, romances, bromances, a whole lotta father-son face-offs, and of course bffs-bashing each other as they build to the opening scenes of ID4 2.0.In fact, I would venture to guess that when this was first drafted as a novel, lots of the 2.0 story was already locked down, such as which actors were coming back and which were not, et cetera. So when a novel has been written around which actors are and which actors are not returning for a movie sequel, you start to see trends that overlap into real life: like, such and such an actress didn’t want to be in the sequel, so there is a whole plot line that emerges about how she dies of cancer and the shakedown that happens with her main character husband. Or, because Will Smith didn’t sign onto the sequel, the plot of this novel rams down your gob the constant reminder that he died heroically (if completely randomly) and yes, it really was meant that way and we didn’t just create a subplot because our film budget wasn’t quite up to snuff.Short chapters. Lots of dialog. Ping-pong-paced scene-to-scene action. Candy. It was a fun little novel, but not exactly great literature, and not something I’d recommend unless you’re an ID fanboy. I have nostalgic feelings down in my icy heart about the original and though I didn’t actually put too much stock in the sequel it was good enough fun for two hours of my life, especially (like I read it) on a flight en route to vacation. Like any extended universe fiction this short novel added a bit to a mythology that I know and –well, not love but — enjoy.

Independence Day: Crucible
Some good moments (after the 1996 invasion). Good characters..except from steven hiller and his family side story. Pratically nothing about alien technology explanation.

Teilweise gut. Irgendwie nicht wirklich spannend geschrieben. Mit einem Wort: Mühsam.
