Cash,The Autobiography by Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash published Cash,The Autobiography in 2000 with Patrick Carr. Cash tells you of his depression era childhood in rural Arkansas and of his love of music even back then. Several chapters later, Cash recounts his experiences in the US Army during the Cold War in Germany from which he moved on to selling appliances and playing music on the side while at the same time raising a family. His beginnings with Sun Records, at the same time as Elvis Presley are legendary. Even back then, he was already taking pills just to keep up with the relentless schedule of touring and recording. Cash tells you that prolonged amphetamines usage cause a form of laryngitis, above and beyond marital breakup. Cash eventually pulled out of it and settled in with his sidekick and star in her own right, June Carter. He’s got all the ups and all the downs, particularly the 1980s, which was his lost decade, until Rick Rubin rehabilitated him in the 1990s. Interestingly Cash treasured his nomination to the Country Music hall Of Fame more than that of the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of fame. Despite all the truth and honesty, the book leaves you a bit underwhelmed, especially if you have seen the movie. It simply lacks the energy and drive. Johnny Cash and his ghostwriter move from one episode to another in an air brushed yet melancholic manner as if they are the feverish dreams of an old man. I honestly can’t recommend this for anyone but complete Johnny Cash fans. On occasion, Cash quotes from his now out-of-print 1975 Memoirs, Man In Black, which had a little more oomph and was faster paced.
