Black Magick Volume 1: Awakening I

I'm a huge fan of Rucka's writing and Scott's art, and this work doesn't disappoint. It has a grim and grungy yet soft vibe that I think matches the setting. I love how they decided to keep everything in black and white and only present color in magical moments. It adds a pleasing aesthetic to the narrative and its direction. Definitely will order volume 2.

Love the idea of a witch who's also a detective as I've long held a fascination for both the occult and criminal investigation. Rowan was a perfect coupling of both and easy to identify with. The artwork captures the brooding, shadowy ambience of the story without ever feeling over-the-top or cartoony. Plot was intriguing enough to leave you wanting more without resorting to cliche. I'm looking forward to Volume 2 to see how it all comes together.

I would read and enjoy anything Rucka writes - his characters are detailed surprising sympathetic, plots are inventive, pacing is great. Nicola Scott's art is amazingly realistic with terrific splashes of the fantastic. Still, I don't necessarily buy the premise: ancient witches holding down regular jobs as police detectives and elementary school teachers by day, working on magickal crises by night. The characters are drawn movie-star pretty - Jaimie Alexander and Chris Hemsworth could model for detectives Black and Morgan. If this were a Netflix or CW series I'd probably watch it, but I'm not sure I'll buy the next volume.

This would be the greatest cop show ever. Action, magic, and suspenseful moments throughout a super awesome series. Nicola Scott and Greg Rucka knocked it clean out the park.

Much of this seems predictable.The premise is not that unique. But so what! The art is engaging and the dialogue is entertaining as it slowly reveals the gathering back histories of the characters. Only one volume and the world this creates feels familiar and comfortable. I am looking forward to this unfolding.

In order to post the review, I have to select a box on how I would describe the plot or how I'd describe the pace. BUT NONE OF THESE CHOICES ARE IN ANY WAY RELATED TO WHAT I WANT TO SAY.When I buy a book, a graphic novel or text, I want a story, something that goes somewhere, tells something. This is more of an introductory chapter to a larger story. In the 128 pages of this story, the amount of roughly six or seven issues of a monthly comic book. we are introduced to the characters, we are told that a vague something is happening, and then it ends. The is an ominous something to happen, or about to happen, but in this book, absolutely nothing happens. This is the start of a story. If it was a regular novel, it is maybe chapter 1.There is no story here. There is no plot. Since it is an introduction, there is no mood. There isn't any pace because nothing much happens. So little is told about each character, that there isn't much character development except maybe a bit with the lead character. And if you like how it starts, there are no indications of when volume 2 is coming out, or if there will be a volume 2. This is like getting the first episode of a serialized tale on Netflix, but there are to be an uncertain period (years?) till the next episode, if there will be a next episode.

The art is a refreshing change from the over exaggerated forms of usual comics. The story moves nicely and follows with actual ritual and tradition in paganism. It's a nice read and quite captivating, very enjoyable.

The story and art are absolutely awesome. It manages to deal with occultism and Wiccan themes without feeling hokey. Product arrived in great shape.

This is the first of Greg Rucka's work that I have read and was blown away by how well you get to know the characters in 5 issues. The story itself is intriguing and compels you to read more. The art is phenomenal as well, and I will be picking up future volumes as they become available.

Aber vom Hexe sein alleine kann man nicht leben. Man braucht einen Job. Rowen Black ist ein Cop. Im Angesicht der Gefahr reißt sie noch ihre Witze und fährt mit dem Motorrad durch die Gegend. Für ihre Kollegen ist sie die Heidin, die mit so mystischen Zeug, Räucherstäbchen und Tee zu tun hat, aber ein guter Cop ist. Was die Kollegen nicht wissen, sie ist eine echte Hexe. Dieses Wissen teilt sie nur mit ihrer alten Freundin Alex, ebenfalls eine Hexe.Während ihr Wicca-Kreis zur Sonnenwende eine Zeremonie abhält, wird sie zu einem Einsatz gerufen. Ein Geiselnehmer will mit ihr reden und nur mit ihr. Er weiß, dass es Hexen wirklich gibt und sie eine ist. Spinnereien? Vielleicht, aber er kennt auch ihren Truename, ihren wahren Namen und dieser hat Macht über die Leute. Auch wenn Rowen aus diesem Vorfall als Sieger hinaus kommt, bleibt es nicht der einzige Vorfall mit Hexenbezug. Das erweckt aber nicht nur das Interesse von Rowen, die in einem Fall ermittelt, auch andere werden aufmerksam."You smell like a headshop, partner"Rowen hat etwas, was man häufig bei "Frauen in Männerberufen" sieht. Sie brezelt sich nicht für den Job auf und macht was sie will. Sie ist sie selbst und damit ein Klischee. Mit Lederjacke, Motorrad, Tattoos und lockeren Sprüchen tritt sie der Welt entgegen. Das Artwork ist größtenteils in schwarz/weiß gehalten. Aber das passt nicht ganz als Beschreibung. Aus dem Tattoobereich gibt es den Begriff Greywork. Diesen finde ich hier sehr treffend. Teilweise sehen die Porträts aus wie schwarz/weiß Fotografien. So detailliert ausgearbeitet, dass man kurz überlegt, ob das eigentlich gezeichnet ist oder ob einem da ein Foto untergeschoben wird.Es gibt hier einen guten Grund für das Greywork. Die Magie. Echte Magie erkennt nicht nur Rowen, sondern auch der Leser sofort an den Farben. Plötzlich taucht ein Farbschimmer auf, hier muss Magie gewirkt haben. Magie wird direkt ausgeübt, Farbexplosion! Ihr merkt es, der Comic sieht wirklich gut aus. Das ist aber nicht alles, auch die Geschichte ist spannend gestaltet. Rowen ist unter ihrer harten Erscheinung wirklich bestürzt über die Vorgänge. Das entgeht auch nicht ihrem Partner Morgan. Er bezieht ihr Verhalten auf den Vorfall mit dem Geiselnehmer, da auch er bereits Erfahrungen mit PTBS gemacht hat.Ro verfolgt nun gemeinsam mit ihrem Partner die Spuren in einem Mordfall und nach Feierabend gemeinsam mit Alex die Hintergründe hinter dem Mord und dem Wissen des Geiselnehmers. Hier ergibt sich eine wirklich spannende und gute Mischung. Mich hatte der Klappentext nicht locken können, aber das durchweg positive Feedback hat mich nun doch mit Black Magick zusammengebracht. Zum Glück, denn ich kann nun die Fortsetzung kaum erwarten.Den ersten Trade gibt es inzwischen übersetzt zu kaufen, aber ich finde das Original lässt sich recht einfach lesen.

I bought this because it was from Rucka, whose work I like. I was not disappointed. The storyline is intricate and well up to anything Rucka has previously written. Perhaps the greatest surprise was the quality of Nicola Scott's artwork - she is not an artist that I have noted before but will now look out for, needless to say she is excellent.Without giving away too much this is a sort of cross between a supernatural story and a cop story and works superbly. I would unreservedly recommend this is either are your interest.

Thrilling and fun. I only hope there's more in the future. Prefect for those who love a little touch of witchcraft in their readings.
