Q: are they shipped flat, or rolled up which would make them hard to flatten on concrete?

They come rolled up in a box. My kids (5 year olds) have never had a problem using them on our driveway and patio. They very easily will lay flat for them in order to make the various designs. We also don't roll them back up after using so a few hot days laying flat in the garage and any curl they had from shipping was gone.

Q: Can you cut the stencils into 4 pieces so they lay flat more easily?

I gave it as a gift to my grandkids, and they loved it playing out in their garden that had a concrete path .Seemed to have no trouble with it in the photos my daughter sent.

Q: How is the quality of the plastic (are they thin, sturdy, or do they roll up on they edges, making it hard for young kids to color in)?

GREAT question :) One I wish I would have asked before purchasing. They DO roll up on the edges and are very thin...I have to hold the edges and provide assistance when they use these. The designs look pretty great though when they are done :)
