Pennington Smart Seed Dense Shade Grass Mix 3 lb

Had a chronic problem area along the side of the house where it NEVER gets sunlight due to the shade from the building and some large trees. I had tried various other seeds and planting solutions. This is the one that finally came through! High quality seeds that germinated fully and provided a lush lawn. They take a while to grow.. not for the impatient among us. Plus make sure you use some peat moss to cover the seeds initially so they stay moist and don't get eaten by the birds.. But after a couple weeks the sprouts came up and within another week or two the lawn looked great and it's been over three months now and looks wonderful. We even had a large family party a couple of weeks ago and the lawn stood up to lot of foot traffic. Very happy with this seed and will use it again!

I would give zero stars, followed the instructions for planting that was listed on the bag and went above and beyond, watered for several days, it's been 14 days now and not one single seed has germinated of approximately 2k square feet I can't find even one blade of new grass I did contact the manufacturer through the Amazon return section, the company has returned the contact Email with a reference number, they want a whole list of information before they'll do a refund, I mean several Questions that require a return answer, one is a picture of the barcode on the bag ( will that got trashed the day I planted the seeds ) , I emailed them back and asked if they also wanted my first born child and my right nut,,, ridiculous, I told them to just keep the $30 and to keep their worthless products, too much of a hassle. Just go to tractor supply and get your seeds, but don't buy Pennington brands Update 03/24/2025 I suppose I'm gonna have to eat crow, I give it 5 stars,21 days later after planting and it appears that all of the seeds have germinated and looking very good. I have a heavily shaded back yard and I have been having trouble getting grass to grow. I scraped across the ground with a garden rake and then sowed the seeds with a small spreader and then soaked them in according to instructions. I planted them in late June in Texas. The seed popped up in less than a week. I watered lightly each morning and evening and then after it was established, about 3 weeks, I switched to watering once a week in the evening. It is doing fabulous. I only seeded a small area of my backyard which is about 25' x 25' and coverage was thin to me, so I added 2 more bags and it still does not cover to my satisfaction, but it looks so much better than before I seeded it.

Good: Coated seeds help with fertilizer and water retention. Bad: Grew poorly, if at all, under my maple trees. Bottom line: To be fair, *nothing* I have tried grows well under those trees. I'll try again in the spring. Not sure whether I'll use Pennington next time though. Three stars, mostly because it *did* grow in a couple other problem spots.

Worked great in the shade and grew grass were it was needed.

Honestly...I'm SHOCKED...I've always struggled with using grass seeds but after taking a leap on this product along with Kentucky...too happy with the results. After coming across another reviewer who said they mixed two, I tried it around Tuesday. I didn't water 2-3 daily nor cover with any dirt and it's been cold off and on. Today (Sunday) I took a walk in one area and decided to look closer and I was more than shocked grass was sprouting after a fresh hair cut lol. Granted it rained twice very light and a little heavier yesterday but geez. This stuff really works. Hopefully in another week I'll see even better results when I go to cut the lawn.

I’ve planted thirds seeds under large oaks in the Lowcountry with sandy dirt and in Atlanta with clay dirt covered with top soil. It exceeded my expectations in both areas. It even grew well in August heat. I just water it a 8 mins or so a few times a day. I didn’t use top soil in the Lowcountry because the dirt is so soft. It did great. You do have to reseed in areas, but once it’s established it beautiful!

About a third of my cottage lawn (north central Wisconsin) is under some 100 year old pines. This area has been grass free for at least 50 years due to the heavy blanket of pine needles it gets every fall and spring. Because of limited use in the fall and spring this has meant no chance for grass to get established. In an effort to change that we have been doing weekly raking for the last 3 years. We have also been planting seed in the area both fall and spring. The first two years we planted some Scotts brand seed which seemed to sprout OK but would eventually die off and not come back the year after. This last year I switched to the Pennington Smart Seed Dense Shade Grass Mix. While I did not get the best germination rate (approx 1/3) (no sprinklers, so we are left to God's watering schedule) what we did get in the fall came back in the spring. The spring planting also lived all year and looks healthy despite a very hot and dry summer. I seeded again this fall with this mix. Nature cooperated by giving us rain every day for almost 3 weeks so we got better germination (1/2 ish). Judging by the year over year increase in the amount of grass I am hopeful one more year of seeding will fill everything in. One thing to note with the Fescue grass is that it does not seem to fill in on its own, so sparse grass remains sparse unless you put down more seed. Overall happy with the product. Watering schedule is probably to blame for the low yield. Grass that sprouted has lived despite less than ideal growing conditions.
