Q: Can this excavator be used outdoors, reliably in the sand to do actual digging ? It looks too frail for this to me.

It is not suitable for outdoor use due to its lightweithness. I would not recommend using it in play sand because the sand will definitely get between gears teeth and put lot of stress on those tiny DC motors. I tried to use small pebbles but it's not powerfully enough to dig through them. On the end, I resort to dry pinto bean so my boy can have some fun with it..... I hope that help you decide. Cass.
