Contains all the updates for 1984 through 1996 E4OD Transmissions.
Do a search of Videos for E4OD Transmissions on the internet and watch them with this book nearby. If you are familiar with working on engines and manual transmissions, in possession of a proper transmission jack, able to weld and fabricate, you will have the prerequisites to overhaul a Ford E4OD Transmission.Be organized, take photos/video/notes of the disassembly, have your favorite E4OD YouTube E4OD video playing, this manual and go for it. Plan on a minimum budget of $2000 for parts. Not inexpensive, but far better than paying even more to the so-called expert transmission shops or mail order rebuilds.Good Transmission shops exist who will stand behind their work with a good warranty, but expect to pay between $4,000 to $10,000 and they will want to do the installation of the transmission themselves. An improper installation can destroy a good rebuild. The new Torque Converter(TC) MUST be installed with the correct clearance between the flex plate and the transmission pump assembly before doing the final torquing of the TC studs to the flex plate.

Good book but missing some pertinent information
I don't know if it was just my copy or a problem with this particular revision but the book is missing some important diagnostic information. Most of problems in the diagnosis section require that the first thing to do is a line pressure test and refer to the service procedure in the book. Problem is there is no service procedure in this revision let alone line pressure specifications which should be included. The line pressure specifications are the following for an E40DIdle speed psi WOT (Wide Open Throttle) psiPark & Neutral 50 - 65 psi Park & Neutral (not applicable)Reverse 70 - 100 psi Reverse 245 - 290 psiOverdrive & 2nd 50 - 65 psi Overdrive & 2nd 165 - 185 psi1st 70 - 100 psi* 1st 175 - 210 psi* Ford Expedition & Navigator trucks are 145 - 175 psiAs far as how to do the tests there are plenty of videos and websites for that.My other nitpick is the solenoid wiring harness diagram should also include the case connectors and the differences for the 89 - 94 models and 95 and up since the in most cases you will wind up replacing the whole solenoid valve body instead of repairing it. The average person working on their own transmission like myself could easily buy the wrong replacement part without knowing that piece of information.

Very pleased
Manual is very easy to understand. My husband was very pleased with how easy it was to refer back to manual while doing transmission rebuild

ATSG Trans book
I have purchased this same type of book for other models of transmissions and they always give you accurate information. They are the best.

Lacks attention to detail, needs review & updated by publisher.
27+ year mechanic giving a honest and true review.Rebuilding a transmission requires attention to detail and this book LACKS some ATTENTION to DETAIL.The pictures aren't clear on some pages. Specifically the page that shows the location of the check balls, you can't see hardly anything. There are no figure numbers for the illustrations example: page 109 it tells you to refer to figure 56 & 57.... if I knew where figure 56 & 57 were that would be much easier. If this is a ASE certified book, and it is.... I question ASE credentials.

only mechanical info
Nothing about the electronic controls or troubleshooting. Only nuts and bolts info.

Good
Nice instructional but not written as well as the same manuals I bought years ago. Still a great reference though. Could use some more detailed writing in reference to hands on experiences. Reference the manuals written on the 400, 325, and 350s.
