A toy...absolute junk. Do not buy if audio quality/handling noise is a concern.
For $50, I was hoping this microphone would be reasonably decent quality. The mic itself has a standard XLR connector, like every other professional mic on the planet, but comes with an XLR-to-TS (yes, UNBALANCED) connector to allow you to plug it in to the JBL Partybox Encore's 1/4" jack input. Since this isn't a review of the Partybox Encore I will only say that the decision to use such a lame microphone connector on the unit, and then sell you an XLR-fitted microphone, is pretty weird. Once connected to the unit, you discover immediately that the microphone input's audio is covered in a thick layer of cheesy reverb, which apparently is appropriate for karaoke singing or something. It turns out you CAN disable this feature, but you have to download the JBL Partybox app to do it -- JBL only says there are "advanced" features available via this app, so I suppose that tells you something about who this product is aimed at. In any case, assuming you are merely looking to use your Partybox and this microphone as a Karaoke box, you would certainly be forgiven for thinking they might make a priority of reducing handheld mic noise (that is, "handling noise" -- the rumbling you get when a microphone is moved around in the user's hand). Instead, with this mic, unless you hold it ABSOLUTELY STILL (perhaps on a mic stand (sold separately)) and DO NOT TOUCH IT, your performances are going to feature a LOT of low end rumble and crackling sounds (particularly if you have the Bass Boost feature enabled, which will make it worse). And forget using this microphone if you're planning to use the unit as a PA -- it's way too noisy and it will drive your audience crazy. If you are looking for a quieter handheld mic, I'd suggest picking up a workhorse mic like the Shure SM-58 (there is a model with an on/off switch, if you need it) for about $100. The sound quality will be radically better. In my case, I decided to try this unit with one of my wireless microphones (a Sennheiser wireless G4), and, once you've shut off the cheesy reverb, the Partybox sounds JUST FINE as a portable, PA unit. I guess the bottom line is -- don't let the quality of this mic turn you off using the Partybox as a PA -- the Partybox is great for that purpose, but it will cost you a little more and require some tweaking in the settings.

Excellent with the JBL PartyBox On-The-Go Essential
Works perfectly with my JBL PartyBox On-The-Go Essential. Make sure you adjust the gain near the port if you have any volume issues. The power button on the mic helps you to quickly turn it off/mute as necessary.
