Great Record with a Strange History
I'm dating myself when I say that I was in Jr. High School when I discovered "Death Walks Behind You", courtesy of an older neighborhood kid who played guitar. "In Hearing Of" came out shortly thereafter, and I've owned it on vinyl since its release in the US. I thought the addition of Pete French to the lineup on vocals was a great idea, as Cann's singing on DWBY was the one weak element of that great proto-prog-metal album. What I didn't find out until I read the liner notes of this extendeded and remastered CD release was that, in fact, French was never in the same studio with Cann and Hammond! After all the basic tracks had been laid down, Vincent Crane was unsatisfied, so he hired French to re-do the vocals, and did a massive edit and mix job to throttle back Cann's over-the-top guitar. I had always wondered why it was so restrained compared to DWBY! Anyway, the resulting album is a little-known gem of 70's british rock, not-quite-metal, not-quite-progressive, but evocative and very well executed. Highly recommended.

Atomic Rooster At Their Peak
The real treat in Castle Music's issue is the long overdue inclusion of the U.S. version of Devil's Answer with Pete French singing lead vocals, making "In Hearing Of" a consistent and inspired album from start to finish. Vincent Crane's vision shines brightly on this album, uncluttered by musical missteps or uncertainty. Virtually every AR compilation leans heavily on this album and it's easy to see why. All of the songs are strong and well executed. If you're going to own one Atomic Rooster CD, this is it.

Listen and learn
Their best production along with previous album, a band evolving and in constant transition

notjustanotherbirdband
This is a great example of a moment in the 70's acid rock sound and really just a moment of what atomic rooster sounded like (Death Walks Behind You is the other prime example). I have nearly all versions back to the 33 1/3 original and this cd clearly has the bottom midrange and smooth extended top end to cause in hearing of hearing damage(its too easy to turn the volume up to 11..)nuff said. Not blues, no good time rocknroll in fact this stuff is a real downer and should not be played if you are being treated for depression or anxiety otherwise loads of fun to crank up and step back in time. The best Roooster to start with if you have none.
