Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Secret Pitch

I am using the cases to help students with reading during after-school tutoring. My 7th grade students LOVE these. I intend on gifting the books to them at the end of the school year.

This is a great series for 8-10 year old kids

Encyclopedia Brown is a 5th grade boy who solves puzzles, crimes and mysteries as easily and as unconsciously as breathing.Each book is a series of short mysteries (5-10 pages each) ending with a question - usually "how did Encyclopedia know that X was responsible for the crime". The answer to each mystery is at the back of the book. Solving the mystery takes no special knowledge, but it does require paying attention to detail. Don't turn to the answer too fast.This book is the second in the series, but the books do not have to be read in order. I loved the Encyclopedia Brown books when I was growing up. I am reading them again before I give them to my nephew who I hope will enjoy them as I did.Adults who like this series may also enjoy the Lateral Thinking Puzzles books.

This is of the same books my 4th grade teacher would read us in the 80's. I got this one to read to my 5 yr. old and we both love it! All the clues are there and after you guess, flip to the back and read the outcome and solution. It's great. I will be getting all the books I can find! Get 'em and read 'em to that kid!

My 9 year old son is smart which includes being head-strong; and loves to read nonfiction. These series of books has caught his attention (after I bribed him to read the first chapter, he was hooked after that). He will read the entire book in an evening and then ask to get the next one. I will quiz him on the content of what he read and he is able to pick up the details of the events as well as why/how Encyclopedia Brown solved the case. Overall: these books keep my son reading!

I like the jokes and mysteries that the boy detective faces every chapter.

This is pretty good a detective story

I used to read Encyclopedia Brown as a kid. It is fun to revisit it as an adult. I look forward to the next adventure.

Encyclopedia Brown シリーズの第2巻目。Idaville の町で起こる10件の様々な事件が、夕食時の両親との会話の中や、夏休み期間中の車庫の探偵事務所から展開するエピソードを通して鮮やかに解決されていく。謎を解くのは Leroy Brown。でも、町中の人々や友人たちは彼のことを Encyclopedia と呼んでいる。「百科事典」と呼び称されるほどの博学の少年探偵が、このシリーズの主人公だ。さて、今回 Encyclopedia が取り組む事件は、1) The Case of the Secret Pitch：Idavilleリトル・リーグのピッチャー Flanaganは不良グループのリーダー Bugs Meanyと、お互いのバットを賭け、ある勝負に出たが…。2) The Case of the Balloon Man：Encyclopediaの昔の同級生 Bobby Tylerが誘拐され、目撃者の通報で、移動菓子売り業の Izzy the balloon manが疑われる…。3) The Case of the Ambushed Cowboy： Texasへの家族旅行、85年前、ポーカーの勝ち負けで反目していた相手を卑怯にも岩陰で待ち伏せしたという Jonny Kidの話をツアー・ガイドから聞かされた Encyclopediaだが…。4) The Case of the Forgetful Sheriff：同じツアー・ガイドから今度は、銃を忘れたまま5人組の銀行強盗を追って行った Wiggins保安官が、全員を射殺した上盗まれた金貨を取り戻したのに縛り首にされたという話を聞かされたEncyclopediaは…。5) The Case of the Hungry Hitchhiker：釣りの帰りに乗せてもらった父親（Idaville警察署長）のパトカーに、強盗犯逃走中の連絡が入った。National Highwayを追跡中、途中の交差点にいたヒッチ・ハイカーが、犯人たちはここでHighwayからCoconut Driveへ折れたと証言する…。6) The Case of the Two-Fisted Poet：詩人気取りの Percy ArbuthnotはEncyclopediaのパートナーでボディーガードでもあるSallyを説き伏せデートに誘い、いいところを見せようとするが…。7) The Case of the Wounded Toe：珍しい歯の収集家 Charlie Stewartは Encyclopediaと歯の収集に出かけた時にエアガンで足を撃たれてしまう。Duke Kellyが犯人だと睨んだEncyclopediaはある罠を仕掛ける…。8) The Case of Excalibur：Woody Fanfingleに大切なペン・ナイフを盗まれた、探してくれとBugsに依頼されたEncyclopedia だが、その捜索中に「こそ泥」の疑いで捕まってしまう。さあ、どうする？9) The Case of the Glass of Ginger Ale：盲目のバイオリニスト Rafino de Verona氏は、Glendon Symphonyのコンサート・マスターである Hans Braun氏と、お互いのストラディバリウスを賭けた密室トリックに挑み、負けてしまった。さて、どんなトリック？10) The Case of the Stomach Puncher：Idavilleのジュニア自転車チャンプのHerb Steinが、買ったばかりの自転車を年上で横暴なBiff Loganに盗まれたと助けを求めてきたが、Biff の裏庭の帆布の下に隠されていた自転車には Herbの名前は書かれていなかった。さて、どうする Encyclopedia？の10件だ。今回も Encyclopedia Brown は難事件を手際良くスマートに解決していく。読者の我々が謎を解くには、事件の流れを失わないようによどみなく読み進みながら、同時にストーリーの細かい部分をないがしろにせず細心の注意を払っていかなければならない。速読と精読が、「車の両輪」のように同時進行で必要だ。この第2巻も第1巻同様、面白い事件の数々だが、辛めに評価すれば、残念ながら星2つ。それは、本巻の 2)、3)、5)、6)、9)、10) が、それぞれ同著者の以前の秀作 Two-Minute Mysteries / More Two-Minute Mysteries / Still More Two-Minute Mysteries からの「焼き直し (rehash)」だからだ。事件のセティングは装いを異にしているが、謎解きが全く同じでは折角の興がそがれてしまう。よって、4/10 = 2/5 で2★。ただし、著者の前作に馴染みのない読者諸氏にとっては、そんなことはどうでもいいので、星5つとしてもいいかも知れない。

kindleで多読に挑戦中。前作に続き読みやすいです。もう少し安かったらいいのにと思います。

今回のブラウンは旅行先でも事件を解決してしまいます。1編1編が短いので、飽きずに読めます。事件のてがかりを探しながら読めるので、英語の勉強になりやすいと思います。

１章１章が短く、それぞれの章末で読者に謎解きをさせるというスタイルは、ベストセラーランキングで常に上位にランクインする"Boy　Detective"と同じです。何か子供の頃に読んだ名探偵明智小五郎シリーズを思い出させてくれます。易しい英文で書かれているので、リラックスして読めますよ。
