1. Select nice, firm apples. Soft ones tend to fall apart in the machine, and don't have the best flavor. 2. Rinse apples with cold water. (I also pre-refrigerate mine for additional firmness.) 3. Make sure the machine is firmly seated on a kitchen countertop or other smooth surface. 4. Release the screw guide on the handle end of the machine and pull the handle all the way back. 5. Center the stem end of the apple on the three prongs on the screw arbor and press the apple onto it about 1/8th of an inch or so. This will keep the apple lined up on that side while you ... 6. center the blossom end of the apple on the coring hole, then press the apple the rest of the way onto the prongs. 7. slowly crank the handle until the peeler is started into the apple, then you can crank faster until the apple is completely cored. 8. Remove the apple and the core from the machine. This sounds much more complicated than it is. I can go through a couple of dozen apples very quickly with this machine. Tips: Firm apples about 3 to 3½ inches in diameter work best. Use more than one variety of apple for pies or applesauce. You can peel potatoes with this, if you remove the coring blade.

Q: Can you just peel an apple with this or does it always slice the apple?

Take of the slicer corer and it will just peel. I love mine

Q: How to detach handle? The peeler came in with handle attached backward. Also any feedback as to how to peel a large apple?

With the handle on the right side, hold the pronged end still (with cover on) and rotate the handle backward toward you. The peeling arm is attached to the base on the bottom. This can be adjusted outward to accommodate larger items using the screw at the bottom. The screw you need to adjust is located in a small spring, turn the screw to the right to make the arm move outward. Hope this helped!
