Q: Can this just be spread on the lawn without fertilization?

Yes. This is more like a soil conditioner that will make future fertilization more effective.

Q: How would I use this product in indoor 5gallon potted plants?

This is a good question. BioChar improves existing soils helping keep nutrients from leaching out during watering. BioChar is NOT a fertilizer. BioChar will stay in the soil (5 gallon pot) and never leave. The "Char" factor is actually derives from charcoal, very porous, and holds nutrients in place for roots. You can simple distribute on the surface, and water it in. Or, stir up the surface soils in your pot THEN add the BioChar. You want the BioChar to get down around the roots as much as possible. You a can add this product every month (1 or 2 Cups) just before fertilizing as it will absorption of nutrients. Depending on how many plants you have to care for, one bag will last a long time. BE SURE and seal up the bag well for storage of the leftover, or move the BioChaar to a container with a tight lid. Hope this helps.

Q: Can I use this as I would activated charcoal for my philodendrons?

I don't know how much activated charcoal you use on your philodendrons but on any plant item, for this Bio Char you would be doing a mix quantity of one tbsp of Bio Char to 3-4 gallons of plain soil, then add some fertilizer equal to just enough for the plants your going to plant but not enough to burn fresh or tender roots. So if your flowers are brand new babies, there would need to be a bunch to meet that demand as noted on measures and quantities noted above.

Q: How often can I apply to the lawn?

As often as you want. Your just adding carbon to your soil, not chemicals or nutrients so you can apply every 2 weeks if you want!
