Atrocious Acts of War
Maupassant is the uncontested master of the shirt story. His language is that of a coinnessuer of the written word. He illustrates that times don't change, especially as related to society's reactions to war. In his words, "You see, sir, poor folk always help one another; it is the great ones of this world who make war.” He related to those who are caught in the acts of atrocity committed by both allies and enemies. Tears are appropriate for his heroine.

Great book, classic.
Character study typical of the author, one of his most famous submissions. Everyone should tru his other books very soon.

A great read.
A fabulous short story which beautifully captures not only the atmosphere of defeat after war but the selfishness and hypocrisy of the human condition. Highly recommended
