Such a wonderful, thought provoking movie
It focused a lot on every day life, as well as the individual relationships we all have w/God. Or in some cases, the lack of a relationship. The Burpo family weren’t & still aren’t perfect, nor were they played that way in this movie. They had money problems, argued, stressed & scared. The Rev. kind of lost his way for a short while. The people in their church/on the church council got angry at him, & one even stated [paraphrasing here] that, “Heaven & Hell weren’t real, they were only ideals to comfort & make us behave.” That part about broke my heart. Someone sitting on the church council doesn’t even believe in Heaven/Hell?! How do they expect those of us who live our lives the way Jesus asked us, b/c He promised us that He would reward us all with the love & happiness of Heaven, to believe in that paradise when they don’t?That’s just sheer hypocrisy. And it really got my religious-philosophy juices running, as I love info that makes me think-especially if it’s religiously based! dAnd, I don’t know about you reading this, but that’s a huge reason why I changed the church I’d been going to for a long, long time. The sermons of the priests just didn’t ring true. As in they were merely reading the words, but not believing them. The passion wasn’t there So, when I started to dread going to church, i knew I needed to change![No, the above about my personal experience w/my church isn’t in the movie, sorry. I included it to try to help you relate a bit more to the movie, & to Rev. Todd specifically. 🙂 Even a man of God will have doubts sometimes. Especially after the horrible experience of almost losing their barely 4 yr-old son!It was the way that Todd & Sonja dealt with it that makes this movie so relatable. Just like you & I might. So we can relate to them both.Todd didn’t believe Colton for quite awhile; even though what Colton told his father rang true, the Rev just couldn’t grasp that his 4 yr-old son was actually telling him all about Jesus, heaven, Todd’s grandfather “Pop”. But it wasn’t until Colton told his mother, Sonja, about his other sister (that’s all, no spoilers!) that both parents realized & completely believed that Colton really HAD been to Heaven.Soon after that, Rev. Todd was able to find the words to clearly (& with deep emotions) explain what Colton had gone through. The words he shared opened up their hearts & allowed them to truly •hear• what he was saying.I’m going to stop here. I don’t want to give up any spoilers - even IF most of you all have already seen it. 😏Besides, my review is already way too long, lol!So for those of you who’ve gotten this far, and are still awake - at least rent “Heaven is for Real” to see for yourself. It’s an older movie, so it’s not expensive. I rented it for $2.99 (SD) before I’d bought it. And even buying it, it’s only $9.99, & I’m thinking that’s for HD, too. But no promises, ya? Anyway, I bet you’ll really enjoy it!
