Almost Perfect...Very Decent Flashlight
PRO's: It has multiple selectable levels to save battery if necessary. Small and light, its easy to tote around. Fits well in one hand. Aluminum frame is solid, well made. The focusing feature is great and extremely useful. Not weird anomalies in it, just smooth light transitions from spot to flood. Battery life with the extended (26650) battery is awesome. There is a snug adapter sleeve included for the smaller diameter battery as well so it doesn't rattle around inside. Extra O-ring included as well, nice. Case is nothing to write home about, but it works. CON: Only one...the ON/OFF button. It's smooth and near-flush to case, silver as opposed to black. However, I can only find it if I can see it, because in the dark, its difficult to "feel" it in order to find it. Perhaps its my rough hands. The button also requires about 1 sec to activate the light and turn it off. A slight tap won't do it. So if flashing signals (like Morse code) is required, its not going happen. The button in darkness is a pain, so I took off a star. Re-engineered, it should activate instantly, and it should be roughened and/or raised up slightly. I'd do it myself but its already flush, and you can't "scuff" it without loosing it below the surface, I would think.

Now my favorite flashlight. May not be available soon.
It's everything I expected. I did a lot of research and read many reviews before I made this purchase. This flashlight has become my favorite. Very high quality and looks really good. Just the right size and amazingly bright. It lights up my path with solid performance. Thanks Fenix for a great product. Sad to find out that Fenix no longer makes or sells this flashlight. They replaced it with a similar model FD41 (with similar specs) that uses a smaller rechargeable LI-Ion (18650) battery. Glad I was able to get this flashlight while it's still available. Highly recommended. Don't wait till it's too late to get yours. BUY IT NOW!

Fenix FD40 1000 Lumen Flashlight package
I own numerous flashlights from higher-end companies like Fenix, Nitecore, and LED Lenser, among many others. I have a couple with the variable beam but none quite as impressive as this little flamethrower. The size is perfect in the hand and it fits easily into a back pocket. I also like the fact that it comes with a cylinder adapter that allows it to use an 18650 as well as the 26650 that it came with. The wide beam is very uniform from center to edge and the tight beam has a very narrow center beam with a spread beam several degrees out from the center beam itself. Very nice for spotlighting something specific as well as anything slightly off to either side.I have to say I am very impressed with this light and I am VERY glad I spent the money. It's well worth it.

A balanced, compact, and powerful flashlight...as close to perfect as I have experienced
This is my favorite flashlight, and I have quite a few! It is bright and compact and the Fenix build quality is solid, as usual. I love the 26650 batteries which last quite a while. I can do without the focus feature, but it does work well and some people like it. The memory feature works well, as one would expect of a battery of this quality. It has a really good and solid hand feel without knurling that is too aggressive.A balanced and perfect flashlight.

Since I love all my Fenix products but don't actually use a flashlight myself, when I heard a friend lament that he needed a "good" flashlight, probably meaning a $20 or so product, I ordered this up as a surprise gift. It did not fail to impress, and to this day is one of his most treasured possessions. Extremely bright and great runtime for the small size. A perfect balance!

GREAT flashlight, now my favorite.
This is a GREAT flashlight. I have a Fenix LD02 that I keep in my pants pocket all the time, a Fenix LD22 in my coat pocket, a Fenix TK75, a ThruNite TN32, and a 300 Lumen and 1000 Lumen Canwelum zoom light, plus a couple of headlamps. They all are useful for different purposes, but the Fenix FD40 is now my favorite light for walking the dogs at night. I live in a remote area so there are no street lights... or any lights, really, so I depend on flashlights. I like zoom lights so I can use the flood setting to see a wide area, and the spotlight (zoom) setting to see far ahead. There are coyotes, cougars, bears and stray dogs... and skunks... so it's important to be able to see what's around so they can be avoided or deterred. The zoom function allows me to do that. On the spot setting it also can deter nocturnal animals by pointing it at their eyes. Most zoom flashlights are made by "cheap" companies because the zoom mechanism has inherent flaws. The zoom head is often loose and rattles, and is not waterproof, even if the flashlight itself is fairly bright. When I saw that a high quality company like Fenix made a zoom light, I couldn't wait to try it. It works flawlessly. The head is tight and is said to be waterproof, with O rings that keep out water. Even better, the beam retains its round shape all the way to full zoom. On cheaper zoom lights the beam goes from round to the square shape of the LED bulb, with no flow of the beam beyond the square. This is rather annoying. On the Fenix even when zoomed to maximum, there is still a gradation of light from the bright center. So it's like using a "regular" flashlight. Much better.I was also impressed with the brightness of this light, relative to its size. It is smaller and lighter than I thought it would be, easily fitting in the palm and in a shirt, pants or jacket pocket. By comparison, the Canwelum 1000 Lumen light I have is about 4" longer, much heavier, and falls out of a pocket because it's so long. The Canwelum is also supposed to be at least 1000 lumens and have a beam distance of over 500 yards, but the Fenix FD 40 is much brighter and its beam throws much further. They say up to 300 meters but mine reaches more like 500 meters with visible illumination, and at 300 meters you can clearly see enough detail to tell what's there. Unless you are doing extreme searching with a flashlight, the FD 40 is plenty bright and long enough for every day needs. It's not in the same class as lights like the ThruNite TN32 or Fenix TK75, which are much brighter and have a much longer beam throw, but then it's a much smaller light with only one battery.Other features I like:The control button is easy to use.You can stand it on its end.It feels good in the hand, is well balanced, not too big or too small.Construction quality is excellent. It has 5 brightness levels. On the lowest, it is dim enough not to destroy night vision or bother others around you.It came with a sturdy holster and lanyard.Features I don't like:It cycles through strobe when turning it on or off (as do most flashlights with various modes). Thanks to Fenix for making a high quality zoom light. I love it.
