Fun, but rather forgetable
The release of a new Wimpy Kid book is the highlight of our young readers' year, no doubt about it. They know that the book comes out at the beginning of November, so they start placing holds on the many copies of the book before they even hit the shelves. Not that they stick - it's unlikely that any of the new Wimpy Kid copies will come back to the shelves during this school year.*A kid asked me to put the book on hold while I was writing this review.I'm not even ashamed to say that I love Wimpy Kid! At first I read it because I had to as a librarian who works a lot with children. But then I caught myself looking forward to each new book and counting the days till November. Wimpy Kid has been a part of my life for nine years, and a new book has come out every year - that's the kind of consistency that I like! Now, I was not sure how I would rate this book up until this morning. Getaway is what I call an event book rather than an issues book. Let me elaborate. Getaway is the story of the Heffleys going on vacation... and that's about it. Sure, there are many misadventures and funny and relate-able situations (Greg is me when he says that he hates looking at people's vacation pictures - unless something bad happened and then he's on board!) but there's nothing memorable about this trip. I remember the road trip they took in the Long Haul several years ago much better than I remember this vacation - and I just read about it!This event book might be so unremarkable compared to the issues books that Wimpy Kid is also known for. I love it when Jeff Kinney explores sibling rivalry, the merits of honesty and dishonesty, a kid's desire to fit in while keeping true to himself, the perils of maintaining friendships when you seem to be growing apart. Those are the issues that make Rodrick Rules, the Ugly Truth and the Last Straw stand out among the other middle-grade novels. I didn't see any issues being explored in Getaway.Still, this series is at the top of its field - middle-grade novels for reluctant readers - so I give it four stars, and I hope that Jeff Kinney keeps the tradition alive and, come November, we'll be reading about Greg Heffley again.
