Interesting and required, so why not 5 stars
It was a textbook for a class... it was assigned, so it couldn't really be bad for its purpose. Interesting stuff!

Good textbook
Great book, however is missing some material. This material is easily found online though. This is why I gave it four stars.

Disappointing, and not college level depth.
I respect Norman Myers, therefore I was looking forward to this text. I have used it twice now for my college environmental science class. I would NOT pick this as my students' primary text. The reason I use it is because the Dept Chair makes that decision, not me.Even for non-majors, non-science based students this text simply does not cover topics in nearly enough depth or scope, and too many topics that are essential are almost or completely missing. In my opinion a textbook should provide many things - especially given the prices charged for them - and detailed insight to enhance critical thinking skills into some of the most controversial and complex modern day topics should be one of those things. I hate to say it, but after using this text the phrase "dumbing it down" comes to mind. We as instructors can pick and choose what we wish to emphasize for the class in general, but the text should be a more inclusive backdrop for that information, thus providing more teaching flexibility. Also, I don't think the modular approach works as well as it sounds in theory. Granted, I tend to jump around with Chapters regardless what text I am using, but I also provide a lot of supplementary information. The idea behind the modules is that any Chapter can be understood independent of the others, but this just really isn't so, especially when so much of environmental science is about building on layers of knowledge and comprehension. This is especially important to be aware of because today, for all the wrong reasons, non-science majors more than majors are steered into taking environmental science; students who have a very poor background in other science classes. Given that tendency, one must really start from the basics and build up, cumulatively, to get these students up to speed. What text books do I like? I've been pleased with most of the texts Richard Wright produces, but I'm equally interested in what new authors there are on the horizon.
