Sakai Takayuki/Wa-Gyuto VG10 core blades with a Teflon coating. The coating reduces the stickiness of the knife, making food glide along its surfaces more readily. Manufactured by one of the most famous workshop, Aoki Hamono Co.,Ltd.in Sakai/Osaka prefecture, Japan.

Great Intro to Japanese Knives
Very impressed with this knife. Super light and sharp right out of the box. Aesthetically pleasing and fun to use. I recommend this as your intro to made in Japan knives.

More counter-top furniture than a utilitarian piece, much less a workhorse
It has a great aesthetic and has the balance, edge, and density of a layered high-carbon knife. The craftsmanship is good but leaves a bit to be desired, namely where the heel of the blade meets the hilt.My real bone to pick is with regard to the “advanced” blade coating (which gives the black color, and provides anti-stick and anti-corrosion properties), as it just seems to be… Teflon. Yikes. After a week of modest use (on appropriate foodstuffs, and with gentle hand washing & care), it’s already showing wear & scratches . More than fearing it’ll live in my kitchen drawer in a couple weeks, I’m concerned residual coating has or will end up in my food.Initially highly impressed, but now, bitter and regretful of this knife purchase and another of the same line.

Not what I expected from a “high quality” knife
Came in with a bent tip. If I’m dropping $200+ on a piece of steel, I would expect better
