Check Your Derailleur's Capacity
I put this cassette on my road bike with the Wolf Tooth Roadlink despite the fact that my derailleur didn't have the capacity to handle it. My derailleur (a Shimano 105, RD-5700), according to Shimano's website, has a capacity of 39 teeth. For those who aren't familiar, your bike's capacity is calculated by taking the difference in the number of teeth in your cassette's smallest and largest gears, and adding that to the difference in the largest and smallest front gears (chainrings). This cassette is an 11-42 and my chainrings are 50-34. So (42-11) + (50-34) = 31 + 16 = 47, which is 8 teeth more than my derailleur's 39-tooth capacity. So I really should have gotten a long cage derailleur that would handle that capacity. But it works fine anyway, as long as I remember not to try to shift into either of the two biggest cassette gears while I'm in the largest chainring up front. If I do, it will probably rip the derailleur off my bike because there isn't enough chain for those gear combinations. I never cross chain in that direction anyway so it isn't an issue.I made a Youtube video that explains the installation. I don't believe I am allowed to post a link here, but if you search Youtube for "Installing an 11-42t Cassette on a Road Bike" you should find it. If you're still having trouble, search Youtube for "Maynard the Miser" which is my channel, and you'll see it in my list of videos. With this cassette I think I could climb El Capitan if I could only hold the bike to the wall. ha ha. It brings my lowest gear combination down to 21 gear inches, which is almost as low as my mountain bike. I only want gears this low on my road bike because I plan to put bikepacking gear on it and use it for ultralight touring, where at times I could be making some serious climbs for hours on end with luggage. I'm not getting any younger, and I had minor knee issues on my last tour so this should help a lot.I've ridden about 75 miles since installing this cassette and am very happy with the way it has worked out.

The "JGBike Derailleur Link" is essential to making this cassette work.
The "JGBike Derailleur Link" is essential to making this cassette work.I replaced a Sunrace 11-42 cassette and a Sram X5 Rear derailleur, with this 11-46 cassette and a Sram GX derailleur. As near as I can tell the Sram GX is the same as the X5 except the GX has a clutch and a cage lock (cage lock is great for getting the rear wheel on and off and for otherwise removing the chain). My derailleur hanger is a 27mm.I could make my X5 derailleur work on the 11-42 cassette, without a derailleur link extension, but the b screw was close to its limit. There's no way the 11-46 will work with a Sram rear derailleur without the JGBike Derailleur Link. That being said, after installing the derailleur link the 11-46 cassette works fantastic.Better than my 11-42 did without the derailleur link.I like running a chain as long as possible, because I think the rear derailleur shifts better when it sits further forward - in other words with the b-screw screwed out as far as you can get it so the derailleur hugs the cassette. But you have to balance that against being able to clear the large cog. This is where the "JGBike Derailleur Link" really helps.I'm running a 1x10 setup with a 41T chain ring.I lengthened my chain so that when I'm in the 46T cog, the chain makes an angle of slightly over 90 degrees with the horizontal - not too extreme. With the chain at this length, the Sram GX take-up is sufficient to run the 11t cog without an excessively loose chain - but it's pretty much at the limit.Really happy I decided to give this 11-46t 10-speed a try instead of going to an 11-speed.

Nice conversion package
This is a great package to convert an old hard tail to a 1X10 setup. The derailleur is nice I put it next to an extra M8000 11 speed I have on my workbench and it has most of the same basic technology. Everything you need is included except the front cog (dependent on your crank) and the wolf tooth goatlink 11 which I think is mentioned in other reviews. I had one in hand but used a RISK link I got here on Amazon and it works great. Definitely a good way to get more life out of an older frame for a low budget. I would highly recommend some blue loc tite on the bolt between the derailleur hanger and whatever link you use. It needs to stay in place and not move in order to work by installing it you create a long lever with 2 pivot point. This is not complicated but does require some basic bike know how. Good project for first timers who are not in a hurry.

Great for 1x9 drive trains. No need to upgrade to a 1x10 for the wide ratio :)
So far I am happy with the cassette. I have a Giant Glory downhill bike that I don't really ride downhill anymore and need something that I can take up the local trails. Instead of spending money on a new bike the wide range cassette was the best way to go. The 11-40t is nice to have. I love how wide it is so now I can still take my bike DH bike up a hill. While not the best way to go for some, but for me I can live with it. I do find that due to the wide ratio shifting is not the smoothest. It really clunks around when shifting. The included 22mm extender is nice as my short cage derailleur works with the 11-40t cassette without having to buy a longer derailleur.Depending on your chain you may need a new chain or add a link or two. The chain that I currently have is just a tad too short when Ininstalled the 11-40t cassette. Also different bikes will vary as some full suspension bikes have more chain movement. One thing that I didn't like was the way the tooth was cut on the cassette. Please refer to the pictures. The teeth looks like a worn cassette with the teeth swept back. Not sure If this is normal, but my other DuraAce cassette doesnt look like this. I'm afraid this will cause the chain to slip under load similar to a worn down cassette.
